Peru: Limeans to experience warm weather and sunshine until August

Living in Peru
Israel J. Ruiz

Just last month Limeans would wake up to gray skies along with drizzle and had to deal with winter temperatures and high levels of humidity.

Presently, however, people in the country's capital are enjoying warmer temperatures and sunshine.

There are even moments throughout the day in which the majority of people take off jackets and sweaters to enjoy the warm weather during a time in which the sun's rays are not usually seen for days on end.

According to engineer Ena Jaimes, head of the climatology department for Peru's national weather service (SENAMHI), this warm weather phenomenon is being caused by the ocean's change in temperature.

The South Anticyclone has weakened and this has brought a current of warm water from Panama's ocean to Peru's northern and central coast, said Jaimes, explaining that the ocean was 1.5 - 2 degrees warmer than what it normally was at this time of year.

The SENAMHI engineer added that this change in temperature had increased the number of hours in which Limeans were seeing the sun and experiencing a "spring-winter".

According to the country's national weather service, people in Lima can expect to experience this pleasant weather at least until the end of the month.

Wow, the effects of global warming.  If it gets too warm Peru will loose all those cold water fish that are so great for Ceviche.

The Humboldt Current warms on occasion. The Fisherman go farther south to catch the species that are common to Lima's waters. I would be more concerned on the unabated dumping of raw sewage into the waters. The consequences are much more lasting and devastating. Chau Friends.
