Venezuela's Hugo Chavez builds homes for Peru's earthquake victims

Living in Peru
Israel J. Ruiz

Despite news of thousands of property deeds being given to the people of Ica as well as the construction of hospitals and homes, earthquake victims in the provinces of Ica, Pisco and Chincha complain the government is not helping them.

Feeling abandoned by Peruvian authorities, citizens south of Lima are willing to receive all the help they can get.

Because of this, the one hundred three-bedroom furnished houses with green lawns built in Chincha with funds provided by socialist leader Hugo Chavez have been received with great appreciation by Peru's earthquake victims.

According to Reuters, Chavez is spending money in Peru largely to support his ally and Garcia's rival, Ollanta Humala, an ultra-nationalist who hopes to become Peru's next president in 2011.

This is not the first time the two have joined forces to help Peru's needy earthquake victims, however.

Just a few days after the earthquake struck, canned food products with pictures of Chavez and Humala on the labels were distributed in devastated regions.

Chavez should worry about the starving and poor in his own country and stay out of Peruvian politics.  He obviously is only helping the poor in Peru in the hopes that he can get his own selfish desires fulfilled (having the Peruvian president as his puppet).

If Chavez wants to hand Humala and election victory he'll have to do something to convince those who wouldn't have voted for him anyway.

He can start with Limeños and start by buying me a Toyota Hilux 2007 and a years supply of gasolina. I'm reaching for that red shirt Chavez... hope you are reading this.

I have been there and seen the houses first hand. High quality pre-fabricated three bedroomed homes.   A fantastic project that has changed lives. I have heard the project is moving in to its second stage and presently applying to purchase more land to build new homes.  Humala had nothing to do with it. Associating it with Chavez buying publicity for Humala is simply a tactic to discredit it.

I am not pro Chavez, but if I was living in the extreme poverty and witnessing the abhorrent social inequality in Peru, I would be voting for radical chage.

It didn`t make news here simply for the fact that its embarrassing for Garcia`s govt. and puts Peru`s meagre and inadequate reconstruction efforts to shame.

6000 soles is the amount being awarded to people in the south who have lost their homes.  Barely enough to pay for the planning applications, architectual planning and all other bureaucracy required to build.  A joke.  And today we read that the country has agreed a 106 million dollar deal to refurbish its ailing fighter jets.

Priorities.. I ask you.

If he is helping, we should let him do that. If you say He is doing this because of a political purpose then would it be better that he hadn't help that poor people?  I think if an action is positive We shouldn't try to be an obstacle.

Paul,
I respect your comments, since you have been there yourself!
As much as I dislike some political leaders, considering how devastated, hungry and poor those people are, it does not matter if it is Hugo Chavez or George Bush or Brad Pitt (not a politician, I know), etc. What matters are those people who are suffering so much.
The heck with politics, if they can be fed and sheltered for at least a little while, that is better than nothing.

I read a report from a main stream Venezuelan publication criticizing the lavish foreign expenditures and gift giving of Chavez while neglecting other Venezuelan national priorities.

I do not oppose charitable help for the earthquake victims, but Chavez should be vary careful not to tread the line which "politicizes" his gifts.

Charity should be charity, no political strings attached.

It should also serve as a cue for the Peruvian government to organize themselves more competently to prevent the opportunity for unsolicited political influences to have their persuasion.

Chavez wishes to portray himself as some sort of revolutionary South American Robin Hood of sorts, but rather I think he is a Prince John in disguise.

Peru should welcome the help from anyone. Even a good deed by the Devil is still a good deed. WinkI like Rachel have read and been told by my friends in Venezuela , they are bothered by Chavez giving their nations wealth away , when so much needs to be done at home. But my friends read and are educated and understand the whole picture.Frown I  would second the nomination for Chavez for president of China, then maybe we could get some new free computers and electronicsWinkChau Friends

Hey Phillip buddy!!  Why don't you move to Venezuela?  Then....Chavez would be your president and the world would be better off having you there.  You probably wouldn't have the freedom to speak your mind if you lived there either.  Hopefully the folks in the south will receive the help they need in a way that doesn't increase the popularity of Olanta Humala.  I'm not sure what the answer is, but I am convinced that Humala isn't it.  Frustrating all the way around!
