Lima, Peru | Sunday 23 November 2008 06:41 | |
José Miguel Vivanco, Americas director for Human Rights Watch, described the trial of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori on charges of crimes against human rights and corruption as impartial, transparent and magnificent.
"The trial is being conducted with absolute transparency, everything is broadcast live and the Peruvian court has held the hearings in an exemplary manner", Vivanco said.
He highlighted the level of openness and fairness in the conduct of hearings because they allow people to hear the testimonies and arguments from both sides.
"This has a tremendous value in the eyes of the Peruvian people and international community because it gives credibility to the process", Vivanco said on a local cable TV news program.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) is dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world.
HRW stands with victims and activists to prevent discrimination, to uphold political freedom, to protect people from inhumane conduct in wartime, and to bring offenders to justice.

Peruvian justice is usually unpredictable and notably slow, so it might take a couple of years to hear the final sentence

That is the most icreible garbage I have read in a long time. Remember how Limenos and Peruvian population was horrified when the bombs were exploding all aroud Lima and Peru and everybody was looking for somebody to put the end to this terror? Now the person which put the end to this horror is on the trail. There is a proverb which: "When you cutting a forest splinters are flying". How short memory. Shame on you Peru! Very sad indeed!

Jan,
You are saying that becuase Fujimori stopped shining path, it is then acceptable that he also had murdered in cold blood people who were not terrorist, just protesters of some of his policies? Those young students murdered in cold blood, families ripped apart and the dead were guilty of no other crime but criticism?
Since you find that acceptable in Peru, then for justice to exist you should have the task of going to the mother of one of the dead innocents and tell her that her son's or daughters's death was acceptable and not deserving of justice because Fujimori also stopped shining path.
You exchanged one form of terrorism for another and as a result of your support for that, you are not a patriot for Peru, but rather a traitor to the country and a shame and embarassment.

Philip probably thinks (can he really menage it?) that Brutus is some kind of ceviche or dance from Puno
