Ecuador's defense minister Javier Ponce is scheduled to pay an official visit to Peru to meet with his Peruvian counterpart, Ántero Flores-Aráoz (right), on August 21.
Both ministers will meet at midday at the Army's General Headquarters located in the Limean district of San Borja.
Ponce's visit to Peru takes place after the arrival of the chief of Ecuador’s Joint Armed Forces Command, General Fabián Varela Moncayo, to Lima on Monday 18 to hold meetings with senior military officers in Peru.
The Ecuadorian official met with the chief of Peru’s Joint Armed Forces Command, Admiral José Aste Daffós and defense minister Flores-Aráoz.
He also visited the Peruvian Navy Industrial Service, gave a lecture at the Navy Center in San Borja and visited the Chavín de Huantar Museum, a monument to Operation Chavín de Huantar, the Peruvian military operation which on April 22 1997 raided the Japanese ambassador’s residence to free 72 hostages.
The museum features a reenactment of the operation, and provides visitors with a valuable lesson in successful hostage emancipation.
