According to a report issued by the Lima-Callao Transportation Council (CTLC), the greatest number of accidents that take place in Lima region occur in the district of Lima and the largest quantity of traffic-related deaths occur in the district of Ate-Vitarte.

Roberto Vélez, technical secretary for the CTLC reported that 3,591 traffic accidents were registered in Lima district in 2006 while 3,471 were registered in the district of San Juan de Lurigancho.

These two districts were followed by Santiago de Surco (2,318), San Isidro (2,128), La Victoria (1,956), Independencia (1,952), Miraflores (1,881), San Martín de Porres (1,856), Ate-Vitarte (1,674) and Cercado del Callao (1,653 ).

The information was put together by compiling accident reports from 108 police stations in 36 districts in Lima and Callao, said Vélez, explaining there had been over 47,000 accidents in 2006.

The report also showed Lima and Callao had 2,776 "black points", that is, areas or intersections where there have been four accidents or one death per year.

The top three most dangerous intersections were ranked as follows: Los Héroes and San Juan avenues in San Juan de Miraflores with 108 accidents, Panamericana Norte and Izaguirre avenues with 97 accidents and Paseo de la República Avenue and Javier Prado Bridge with a total of 85 accidents.

Increasing amounts of new car owners, suicidal combi/bus drivers, crazy taxi drivers combined with a completely corrupt and incompetent police force is not helping the situation.

You forgot to mention people crossing wherever they feel like, and causing majority of accidents...driving on Panamericana in Lima is quite an experience usually.

Proof, if any were needed, of what ******* terrible drivers Peruvians are. And I think that, for once, this is a valid sweeping generalization. When it comes to roads and vehicles they've got their heads up their arse. Ask anyone who visits the country.

Actually, in the US, we say drivers from New Jersey are unforgivably terrible as a sweeping generalization.  And its true.

Oddly enough, there is a large population of Peruvians in New Jersey.....

Cynic is completely right. Without any enforcement of the laws and the present bribe system ,it will only get worse. Chau.

Lack of enforcement of traffic laws, lack of sutible traffic patterns and signage, etc.  I wish I could say that this is improving, but it certainly seems to be getting worse.

Hopefully the vehicle inspections will start running again soon.  And hopefully cars start getting checked and fined if they aren't safe to drive.

On reflection, only 10 accidents a day for downtown Lima sounds low. Remember, these are only the ones that get reported. The real number is probably much higher.
