Peru university will not give land to Lima for new highway project

The problem the Municipality of Lima is having with representatives of San Marcos University is repeating itself with authorities at the National University of Engineering (UNI), said reporters for La Republica daily on Friday.

Germán Grajeda, a university head at UNI and the representative of Petrouni bus station, which belongs to UNI, has affirmed property will not be given to the Municipality of Lima to expand Panamericana Norte Highway.

"We are not going to give them one square centimeter and they can't take it away from us because they would be violating our rights," said Grajeda.

"We are not squatters."

As it was previously announced, the municipality has planned to build an additional three lanes on Panamericana Norte Highway in the district of San Martin de Porres.

The lanes are to be two kilometers - over one mile - in length.

To accomplish this deed, authorities would need to use half of the property belonging to Petrouni bus station and the land where Fiori bus station is located.

The municipality has already closed Fiori bus station, affirming it had been operating illegally for over 20 years.

"We are not squatters or street vendors they can come and order off this land," stated Grajeda.

"We purchased the area we are using and it's registered."

First is the interest of all Peruvians. Expropiate that piece of land.

Yeah. Country First.
The owners of this land should be forced to hand it over. If they refuse, they should be thrown in jail.

There does exist the right of eminent domain in Peru.  Exercise it!

Eminent domain is definitely the way to go - of course, they need to be paid fairly for the land....

That land belongs to the state. It is a public University, and it is not the whole University, it is only part of the surrounding area.

Yep, the municipality should have to pay well for the land.  The expansion of the road is needed.

They should not be paid, they should be dragged out an publicly killed as traitors

Well....OK....but only if they do it in Estadio Monumental and sell me a ticket to watch.

Everyone in this forum:  let me warn you about "Phillip"...he's passing himself as "Peruvian", but he's not.
He's just fluent in Spanish and is rabid about Peruvian issues. He purports to be more Peruvian than Peruvians. Hey! I'm flattered he loves my country...but I don't like him insulting non-Peruvians and calling them morons and "maricones". Don't take any abuse from him...nip it in the bud. He's ok right now.....except for the part where he says "they should be publicly killed as traitors".  This is just a sample of the type of radical stuff he writes. If he starts getting crazy with his comments....either report him to LIP to have him blocked, or just ignore him, he doesn't deserve an answer from any of you. LiP has blocked him several times on other forums as an undesirable.  We don't need to put up with his abuse and his raunchy language, which I resent because it makes us Peruvians look bad.  So, I'm just warning you that he could go into his sociopath mode......just report it to the editor, if he doesn't get to his postings himself.  We need to keep these forums clean for other people to read.  "Phillip"....you better behave with this group of people.

Thank you Hugo,

Hey Phillip? Do you want to stand by like Himmler while your troops commit the attrocity suggested? Come on man! You are a humanbeing, be both. Think of the literal application before making such suggestions. You and your opinions will be more carefully considered, your participation more appreciated, and people will think more of you.

I am not Peruvian either, but I am a student of our world and I care very much about our global society finding ways to become more peaceful and prosperous. And things are happening in South America that have never happened before. We in the U.S. don't have a reputation for a fair veiw from our main stream press, and I don't speak Spanish well at all, so I very much value being welcomed to participate in a few sites like this. It helps me get a more global understanding and to share a perspective that's unusual to hear from Yankees like me.

One more note to you Phillip, Remember Vladimer Ilyich Lenin? He was not at all interested in politics until his brother, in actuallity a minor disident, was executed by the Tzarist government. The people who killed him for organizing political action for fairness in Russian society, did they talk like you have? What if their approach had been less violent and more compassionate to the real mass suffering due to economic imballance? Could the Russian State have been progressively reformed so that no Communist Revolution would have happened? But no. They rounded up their political opponents and killed them. And every one they killed had brothers and sisters and extended families who became enemies of the Tzar. And look what happened. Terrible upheavals and revolutions will continue to plague humanity until we learn that we must work somehow with everyone peacefully. Even if big roads or other projects run into trouble over issues of other people's human and civil rights. It has to be worked out carefully, peacefully, and with everyone's rights unviolated or we are dogs. OH.... There we go with the animals again... Sorry Fido.

Though an interesting discussion and exercise, I think, Anton and Hugo, you are taking the troll way to seriously! Laughing

How will the universtiy students be affected in case of giving up the land for transportation? Will this affect them somehow? How? Does anyone know?

I hope the municipality makes sure that the students get an alternative plan that would work out for university students - if this affects them somehow.

I hope also that the university students are fighting for a right cause and NOT just for university political interests.

In general, UNI and San Marcos university students are hard-working, studious people. Many of them struggling with financial needs and studying their brains out - I respect them and admire them. BUT, I know some of them also interested in political interests. Hope the ones fighting for the land in question are not just for political selfish interests.

I know someone with a brilliant mind who has proven abilities in dealing with students. I think we need a new president with new ideas.

Carl,
IF YOU DON'T KNOW who and how university students struggle financially in Peru - regardless of the fact that government pays for tuition, and I am only talking about UNI and San Marcos U students, I am NOT talking about private universities (e.g., El Pacifico, Catolica U, etc.).

If you don't know this....- THEN...you know nothing about Peru...And I have nothing to argue with you

# carl says :

Tuition is free, the only thing that you have to do, is working a part time; if you don t live with your daddies.

Hey Carl,
Actually, I do recall agreeing with you on other subjects..so, I know you are smart Smile

I personally have paid my own university education in North America, because this is possible here. Even when government does not pay university tuition, there is work here available for capable people who want to work.

The reality in Peru is very different. Part time work may not be enough to even survive due to exploitation. I have had cousins study in Peru, and I know how hard it is there, even when living with your parents.
I consider myself luckier ---and that is why I respect UNI and San Marcos students. (I got into US university easily --- but I will admit I could not pass UNI mathematical equations--I did not make it in Peru...For me, the competition was tougher in Peru than in the US.)

What was the post?
San Marcos University students think that the University belongs to them, so they do not allow to make a  new road by the City Hall  to release traffic jam.
If there is future great engineers why do not work them with the City Hall to solve such a kind of problem.
Instead of doing politics.
