The Chilean military has announced it will remove 23,000 anti-personnel (AP) and anti-tank (AT) land mines that were placed between its border with Peru in the 70s.

According to Chilean newspaper El Mercurio, in compliance with the Ottawa treaty, the country's military will use heavy machinery donated by the United States to begin removing mines at Escritos ravine.

12,000 AP mines and 10,900 AT mines are to be removed from the area, which is 800 meters (1/2 mile) from the Chacalluta border in Arica and 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) north of Santiago.

Furthermore, the country's Minister of Defense, José Goñi, announced that $9.6 million would be invested in machinery and technology to clear minefields.

Mines will begin to be removed on November 3, at which time land will be cleared for a highway expansion project.

It was reported that construction of the highway is to begin in six months.

They must be getting Peruvians to do the work - how else could they have it done for only Nine Dollars and Sixty Cents?

Mike,
You're such an arrogant miserable person. How do you dare to claim that Peruvians "must" do that work, suggesting that we do cheap work.
You should be banned for posting this offending statement.

I'm not going to respond much - other than to say that Julio and JCW both need to get a skin.

In Peru, it's considered among men and women, cowardly or deceitful not to express your opinion in the most direct or explicit way, particularly not using your real name.
We call it speaking "sin pelos en la lengua" and it's considered a good trait.

We leave the flowery language for women, song and dance.

If you want to say something, say it clearly. Pretend you're men.
