Peru man undergoes emergency operation after 8-day erection

A 56-year-old man had to undergo surgery in a hospital in northern Peru after he was diagnosed with priapism, a persistent, usually painful, erection that lasts for more than four hours and occurs without sexual stimulation.

The man had had the erection for eight days and was in intense pain, reported El Comercio daily, explaining that the hospital had issued a press release stating the man had not taken any drugs or medication.

After being diagnosed with priapism, which develops when blood in the penis becomes trapped and unable to drain, Urologist Nelson Carrasco established that an emergency operation had to be performed.

It was reported that this is the second case of priapism the doctors have seen in the past six months at this hospital in Piura.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, if the condition is not treated within hours, it can lead to scarring and permanent erectile dysfunction.

The clinic explained that priapism was commonly caused by sickle cell anemia or the misuse of medications.
