Apurimac is one of the most isolated and impoverished departments of Peru. Most of it is only accessible by vehicle, so where else are they going to buy from? Lima is about as far as China in their eyes.

Speaking of China, Rachel, I suspect that "buy from Peru" will be important everywhere in Peru, once all the "Free Trade arrangement from China " stuff starts flooding into Peru.It has wrecked many of our manufacturers here in Australia, I can say to you. :-(

An FTA w/China is a deal with the devil. The U.S. does not even have one and our economy has been seriously affected by Chinese products and manufacturing.

Many Peruvians say they hate Chinese products, but they won't spend the extra money to buy Peruvian when the Chinese products are cheaper.

Peruvian labor is cheap, but it cannot beat the cheaper labor of the Chinese.

The Free Trade Agreement will kill Peru. They dont have the financial backbone to deal with the loss of jobs.

I think they might even find that they are violating some clause of their free trade agreements by encouraging government supported buy Peruvian products only campaigns.  So much for a government supposedly all for free trade and once things start to get a bit bad, they support a protectionist program.  Never a dull moment reading the news from Peru
