Doe Run Peru might be suspended from National Society of Mining, Petrol and Energy

The President of the National Society of Mining, Petrol and Energy (SNMPE), Hans Flury, reported that SNMPE is considering to suspend Doe Run Peru definitely, since is it not paying to its creditors.

He remarked, however, that SNMPE has not come to a decision yet.

According to local and foreign press coverage, Doe Run Peru has told the government it will meet the terms of a financial bailout plan only if  the deadline for completing its environmental cleanup plan is extended, since they have so far spent $307 million on it.

The plan, locally known as “Programa de Adecuacion y Manejo Ambiental” (PAMA), has been causing many struggles among the company, the Peruvian government, workers and local population in recent years, since Doe Run has allegedly delayed its completion on purpose.

When Doe Run bought the smelter in 1997, the PAMA was supposed to be fully applied in 10 years, but the company got a three-year extension in 2006, and it is reportedly asking for another one now.

Doe Run officials have declined to declare on the matter.

Suspend them already. I've had it with Doe Run. They have a lot of nerve asking the Peruvian government for money after all the sickness, death, and exploitation they've dealt us with.

I agree.  They need to be shut down.  They will always find some excuse to delay cleaning up and they have already caused enough damage.  If they can't do business without causing massive pollution problems, then they should be shut down.  Hopefully they can still be forced to either finish the clean up or pay for finishing it.

The bottom line is that Doe Run is close to bankrupcy and has received government subsidies to operate.  The people in Oroya wants them to continue operating since they provide most of the available work in the area.  if they leave, the government will not support the workers.  It is not as simple as closing it down and problem solved.

Yes, they would need someone else to come in to operate the mine.  Just like Doe Run did.  They came into a polluted mess and made promises to operate the mine AND clean up the mess.  They have not been able to fulfill those contracts and promises.  So if there is another interested company, perhaps they need to be given a chance?

Most of these sorts of things are big upon and Doe Run won that bid.  If they bid something that they are not able to fulfill, then they need to be ousted and one of their competitors needs to be given the rights.
