Peru supports before OAS legal moves taken to control violence in Bagua

Andina

The Peruvian Government supported Tuesday before the OAS the legal moves taken to control violent acts in the Amazon area of Bagua, and assured it will do "whatever is necessary" to clarify the events.

"The Peruvian government, faced with a conspiracy against the democratic system, answered against violence with the powers given by the Constitution, respecting the fundamental rights of citizens, without any distinction, and providing assistance and legal supervision", said Maria Zavala, Peruvian Ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS).

The government is doing its best to clarify these unfortunate events under its democratic framework" Zavala said in the extraordinary meeting held at the OAS Permanent Council at its headquarters in Washington.

"Alan García's government used mechanisms and dialogue (...) and a legal framework to address successfully the painful impasse we faced this weekend," added the Peruvian ambassador.

The violent incidents, which resulted in the deaths of at least 24 policemen and nine Indians, were unleashed last Friday.

Senor Garcia,

It is a disgrace that your government chose to end the talks this way and forcefully use artillery on peaceful protests, which resulted in the deaths of many that didn't have to die.

I am ashamed to be a Peruvian today for the acts you've displayed not only to the Republic of Peru but in the eyes of the whole world.

Eres un sinverguenza.
