From today, the temperatures will drop even more in Peru southern highlands, reports the National Meteorology Service (Senamhi).

The more affected regions will be Puno, Huancavelica, Ayacucho and Cusco, whose minimun temperatures are likely to drop to -9 degrees Celsius.

"The area has remained at -3 ° C and -4 ° C, these days, but due to a sudden drop in humidity levels, the averages will drop,” explained Teresa Garcia, a Senamhi expert, adding that in the case of Cuzco “temperatures will remain positive turning around the zero and 0.5 degrees."

Since rain and snow are expected in the highlands, Senamhi encourages the drivers to check on the conditions of their vehicles, especially on the tires, and to be aware of the weather alerts issued by local radio stations.

Julio Rau Rau, president of the National Corporation of Transport Companies of Peru (Conet) stated that his organization has not agreed on any strike for tomorrow, and he added that the urban public transport service is assured.

He publicly said that Mario Huaman, the General Secretary of the Peru's General Confederation of Workers, has been interfering and “acting without ethics,” pretending to involve the transportation unions into their protests.

"I regret to say that the public has been misinformed. We don't know those people who claim to represent the drivers' union. They need to be a little more responsible," he said.

He remarked that the Government has offered to send police officers to their terminals in order to guarantee the security of the transport.

Peru: Beware of "marcas" crime.

LivinginPeru.com
Isabel Guerra

The “marcaje”, or following people who have retired cash from banks in order to attack them, has increased in Lima in recent times.

According to Peru's Police Bank Security Unit, these criminals have evolved; now they recruit very respectable-looking persons to spy on the prospective victims, in order to detect someone who retires a large amount of cash.

These spies are locally known as “marcas.”

“They just wander inside the bank or wait in line looking at everyone, and when they choose a target they alert the rest of the band, by a cell phone call, by SMS or just by manual gestures,” said an agent from Peru's Police Intelligence Unit.

However, only 20% of these crimes are reported to the Police. The rest is solved directly within the banks.

Limean districts of Surco and San Miguel are the ones with most cases reported. The police has captured 14 of these bands last year, but the problem continues, so being aware of this type of crime is necessary.

PeruRail plans to launch luxury tourist services in Lake Titicaca in Puno in late 2010 aboard the 89-year-old English ship "Ollanta", the company’s general manager Armando Pareja reported.

"This is a highly prized project for PeruRail, which will require an investment of between six and eight million dollars only in the restoration process, and we plan to finish it by the end of 2010," Pareja said.

"It will have 45 cabins, some with private bath, as well as a wooden deck, among other places," Pareja explained.

PeruRail’s intention is to offer in daily tours, but tourists will not stay overnight on the boat.

"If tourism is developed in the area as it is expected, then we move to the second phase of the project, which is to develop tour packages for three days and two nights," Pareja added.
