El Comendador de Caraveli (a pisco produced in Arequipa, Peru) was awarded a Silver Medal at the 16th edition of Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2009, the most prestigious wine and spirits competition.

The contest was held on April 25th-27th in Valencia, Spain, gathering 54 producing countries in this edition.

A total of 250 experts coming from four continents reunited at the contest to blind taste, and to compare the 6289 wines and spirits participating in the competition.

El Comendador de Caraveli is produced by the Pisco and Wines Producers Association of Caraveli, an organization conformed by 17 small vine producers from the province of Caraveli in Arequipa region, southern Peru.

Under the new Rapid Renewal Program instituted by the U.S. Embassy in Lima, certain applicants for U.S. business and tourism visas may no longer be required to appear for a personal interview at the Embassy. 

These applicants are “Interview Exempt.”

Any Interview Exempt applicant who has not had impressions of all ten fingerprints taken at a prior visa interview will have to appear at the Embassy for fingerprints only, and will be able to leave after the fingerprints are taken. 

If an Interview Exempt applicant has already had impressions of all ten fingerprints taken at a prior visa interview, those prior fingerprints can now be re-used, so the applicant will not have to come to the Embassy at all, but may instead send all required documents to the Embassy via the DHL delivery service. 

The applicant’s passport and new visa will then be returned by DHL.

Peru’s Production Minister Elena Conterno Martinelli will launch today the national "Buy From Peru" campaign in the city of Abancay (Apurimac) with the aim of encouraging people to support of domestic suppliers and producers by buying Peruvian products.

The ceremony will be held today (Thursday) at 13:15 hours (18:15 GMT) in Abancay’s main square, and will be attended by Apurimac’s governor, David Salazar Morote, as well as local authorities and entrepreneurs.

The “Buy from Peru” campaign has already been launched in the regions of Junin, Tumbes, Ucayali, La Libertad, Ayacucho, Lima, Cajamarca, Lambayeque, San Martin and Arequipa.

The official webpage supporting the candidacy of Lake Titicaca will launch on May 24th a second massive campaign calling for votes for Lake Titicaca, Colca Canyon and Amazon River in the New Seven Wonders of Nature election.

This campaign will take place in the Peruvian cities of Arequipa, Tacna, Moquegua, Juliaca, Puno and Iquitos, as well as the Bolivian cities of La Paz, El Alto, Oruro, and Potosí.

"We are working with representatives from the regional government of Loreto and Autocolca in Arequipa -which support the Amazon River and Colca Canyon, respectively- to optimize our efforts," said Eugenio Rojas, mayor of Achacachi (Bolivia).

"In the first campaign we had over 185,000 votes and with the support of Peru we will achieve our desired goal until July 7," he added.

The Canadian Embassy in Peru wishes to inform the general public that the Embassy is moving to a new address.  The Embassy will be closed on Friday, November 30th, 2007, due to the move.  As of Monday, December 3rd, the Embassy will offer its full range of services at Calle Bolognesi 228, Miraflores.

The new chancery was designed by the Peruvian architect Rafael Morales Blondet, who says it visually conveys Canada’s stability, strength and transparency. It has been equipped with an automated intelligent system that will guarantee efficiency in all of the building’s functions.

(LIP-ir) -- Because of maintenance that has to be done at water treatment plant N°2, the water supply in 19 of Lima, Peru's districts will be temporarily cut on Wednesday November 21, announced the city's state-owned water company, SEDAPAL.

It was announced that from 8:30 a.m. Wednesday November 21 until 6:00 a.m. Thursday November 22, the water supply in the districts of San Luis, San Borja, Surco, Surquillo, Barranco, Chorrillos and San Juan de Miraflores would be cut.

Furthermore, parts of Ate, San Isidro and La Victoria will also have their water supply temporarily suspended.

The work that is to be done will be on the Atarjea–Próceres water main, where the company will perform two different tasks, said SEDAPAL.

From 9 p.m. Wednesday November 21 until 6 a.m. Thursday 22, the districts of La Molina, Independencia, San Martín de Porres, Villa El Salvador and Villa María del Triunfo will also have their water supply temporarily suspended.

Certain areas in the districts of Santa Anita, El Agustino, San Juan de Lurigancho and Comas will also be affected by the maintenance and repairs.

(LIP-ir) -- "It's been cold in Lima these days, hasn't it? When you're out in the street you can really feel it, but when you get home you feel much warmer, especially if have a hot cup of coffee or tea, a warm soup or even a comfortable blanket to snuggle under."

"Our brothers and sisters in the south do not have any of these basic needs. There are many places where aid is not enough or is not arriving the way it should. One of those places is Chincha, specifically El Carmen, El Guayabo and San Requis."

These were the sincere and wholehearted statements of the spokesperson representing 18 musical groups and bands.

In a press release issued today, the bands announced that "The Solidarity Concert" has been organized to raise funds for all of the people that were victims of the earthquake and have not received help yet.

The 18 artists and groups have organized this kind act in a loving and generous way, only expecting that audiences help in their mission to aid those that have not been assisted yet, they will not be paid or remunerated in any way. The only compensation sought is a person willing to help those that have been left devastated by the earthquake.

It was announced that the concert is to be held at Parque Reducto de Miraflores (on the corner of Benavides Ave. and the Via Expresa) on Sunday September 2 from 3 p.m. - 10 p.m. There will be no admission fees. Nonetheless, it is hoped that everyone that attends will bring donations for those that are in desperate need of basic provisions in the South.

"There are a lot of people living on the street, children and elderly people are among them. All those that can bring food, clothes, blankets, diapers, plastic bags, sleeping bags and tents (tents are very necessary at this time), will be welcome."
