Peru's Mario Vargas Llosa was awarded with "Caballero Bonald" prize.

Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa won the International Essay Contest “Caballero Bonald” Award, with his work “El viaje a la ficción” (A Trip to Fiction), which explores the world of the Uruguayan fiction writer Juan Carlos Onetti.

The jury acknowledged Vargas Llosa's essay as a very intense work on one of the greatest Latin American authors from the 20th Century.

More than 80 essays were submitted from Spain and Latin America to Caballero Bonald contest, which pays 30,000 Euros (approximately US $ 44,335 dollars).

Vargas Llosa admitted that he has always been fascinated by Onetti's fantastic universe, and he defines Onetti as one of the first modern authors in Spanish.

“I have enjoyed writing this book, trying to understand this author,” said Vargas Llosa.

Bolivia accepts that "El Condor Pasa" belongs to Peru's cultural heritage

The government of Bolivia finally accepted that the famous tune “El Cóndor Pasa” (The Condor passes by) is from Peruvian origin, stating that the Bolivian blogs that claim the song is in fact Bolivian “do not have legal recognition.”

Bolivia's Cultural Minister, Pablo Groux, said that Bolivia never tried to steal the “paternity” of the aforementioned folk tune.

“El Cóndor Pasa was composed by a Peruvian citizen. Peru declared the tune as part of its cultural heritage and we respect that,” he told the press.

Wilder Bendezú, the Andean Parliament Deputy President, said that “this is a great step towards the mutual respect of our countries' traditions.”

"El Cóndor Pasa" was written by Peruvian composer Daniel Alomía Robles en 1913, and was declared as part of Peruvian cultural heritage in 2004.

Peru: Museum housing Mummy Juanita to be expanded

The facilities of the Santuarios Andinos Museum, which houses the Mummy Juanita, will be expanded aiming to show visitors unedited pieces found in pre-Inca tombs, reported Jose Antonio Chavez, head of the cultural complex.

There will be three new rooms to be installed in the complex, located one block away from the main square of Arequipa, he explained.

The new atmospheres will house the mummies and the offerings found in their tombs that were located in the volcanoes Sara Sara, Misti and Pichu Pichu. The investigation center of the Universidad Catolica de Santa Maria (UCSM) excavated and explored these areas since 1979.

The director of the Santuarios Andinos Museum said that one of the rooms will house the only mummy found in the Sara Sara volcano next to its offerings.

The second room will house 6 mummies that were found in two different tombs in the Misti volcano, which will also be exhibited with their ceremonial pieces.

In the third room, the tourist will be able to appreciate 2 mummies found in the Pichu Pichu volcano.

El Gran Combo to Perform in Lima

September 26th is the date in which Lima’s salsa dancers will have the chance to dance to some of the best salsa music in all of Latin America. The Puerto Rican group, El Gran Combo, will celebrate their 50 years of artistic life in La Videna in San Luis. The group will also collaborate with Gilberto Santa Rosa and José Alberto El Canario.

The group has just released a new commemorative album, “Una Noche de Salsa con los Grandes,” and joins salsa stars from all over the world, as they perform together on this unforgettable album.

The group expressed their desire to be able to work with Eva Ayllón, and have her perform as well. They expressed their delight in her work, stating “it is always an honor to listen to her voice and witness her strong stage presence.”

Eva Ayllón, Gianmarco and Novalima nominated for Latin Grammys

The Peruvian musicians Eva Ayllón, Gianmarco Zignago and the group Novalima will compete for various awards on November 5th in Las Vegas at the 2009 Latin Grammy Awards.

Eva Ayllón, with her latest release “Kimba Fá,” has been nominated for the Best Folk Music Album. She will compete against singers such as Walter Silva and Mercedes Sosa for the title.

Giamarco will compete in the category of Best Full Length Music Video, with his video “Gian Marco Live from the Moon.” Competition ranges from Draco Rosa to Ivete Sangalo.

And Nova Lima will compete for the honor of Best Alternative Music Album, against groups such as los Babasónicos, Kinky and Los Amigos Invisibles.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the inauguration of the Latin Grammys.

Peru's INC recovered ancient inca mummies

A local citizen gave back to Peru's National Culture Institute (INC) a two mummies, corresponding to an adult woman (her estimated age is 35-40) and an infant, as well as several objects that were buried with them.

According to local TV news channel Canal N, the female mummy was found carrying the infant mummy in her arms, both in fetal position, buried in a spot near Cochapata, in the western esplanade of Sacsayhuamán Archaeological Park.

The objects found include weaving tools, woven and braided straw and camelid leather sandals, wood conopas (figures), bird feathers, a small ceramic kero, a small jar, parts of fabrics with design, among others.

Walter Camacho, the Director of the park, said that the bundle will be submitted to the physical and chemical laboratory of the National Institute of Culture (INC) to conduct archaeological investigations.

Peru: Trujillo to host 'Marinera' contest with more than 200 dancers

More than 200 dancers will participate in the II Rookies and III Extraordinary 'Marinera Norteña' 2009 contest, to start tomorrow (Saturday, September 12th) in Trujillo, capital city of the region La Libertad.

The contest, organized by the “Te Amo Perú” (I love You, Peru) Academy, will start at 10am at the Gran Chimú Cosliseum, and will gather dancers from several academies, schools, workshops, universities, clubs, cultural associations and independent dancers.

Ronald Ramirez, head organizer of the event, said the jury will consider the couple's dancing, rhythm, personality, playfulness, flirtation, elegant movements and clothing.

The contest's main purpose is to draw the young people's attention to this beautiful dance, so that it continues to be a part of the living culture of Peruvians.

Peru: Pre Inca citadel found in Zaña river's upper basin

Peruvian archaeologist Walter Alva confirmed Wednesday that a pre-Inca citadel was found in Zaña river's upper basin, between the departments of Lambayeque and Cajamarca.

It would be an archaeological complex belonging to the Cajamarca culture, from the early Christian era.

According to Alva, who discovered the royal tombs of the Lord of Sipan, so far there are only remains of stone buildings in the vegetation.

"An expedition will return to the scene in November, to investigate more, This culture is poorly studied by the moment, but will surely generate many archaeological projects, "said Alva.

A group of researchers and archaeologists, biologists traveled through Zaña River Upper Basin a few weeks ago, during the eight days, and are now warning that regional cultural richnesses are being threatened by deforestation and mining.

Peru: Plácido Domingo delighted opera lovers in Lima

Plácido Domingo, the famous Spanish tenor, gave an splendid show last night at the Monumental Stadium Esplanade.

Domingo sang the best of his repertoire, which included mostly opera and 'zarzuela,' to an audience estimated to be over 10,000 people. The audience was thrilled because the tenor also performed a Peruvian song; Chabuca Granda's “La Flor de la Canela.”

Plácido Domingo started with Le Cid, by Jules Massenet; L’ Arlesiana, by Francesco Cilea; Winterstürme wichen dem wonnemond, by Richard Wagner, and also a duet with Ana María Martínez, L’ Amico Fritz, by Pietro Mascagni, as well as more classical repertoire.

The second part was dedicated to Spanish popular genre “zarzuela,” a type of operetta, and Latino songs.

The tenor was accompanied by Peru's National Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by Eugene Kohn.

Municipality of Cusco to launch cultural programs

The Municipality of Cusco announces the opening night of the First Encounter of Traditional Games, that will start tomorrow (September 5th) at 9am at the Plazoleta de San Pedro (Small Square of Saint Peter's), according to El Sol del Cusco newspaper.

This event pursues the stregthening of social interactions by means of searching new spaces for socialization and the recovery of traditional games and toys.

This event has been possible thanks to the collaboration of Peru's National Institute of Culture (INC) and the Guamán Poma de Ayala Center.

The Municipality is also about to launch a program, called Chaquipi Purisunchis, that will suspend all vehicular traffic in the historic downtown on Sundays between 9am and 2pm, with the aim of encouraging locals and tourists to enjoy the city attractions in a safe, clean environment.
