According to a report aired this afternoon by Canal N, the Peruvian government has just requested Interpol to arrest Alberto Pizango, the Peruvian indigenous leader currently in Nicaragua as a political refugee.

Pizango, former President of the Inter Ethnics Association for the Development of the Peruvian Jungle (Aidesep) was officially charged with instigation of violence, sedition and mutiny after the violent clashes in Bagua (Amazon region) that ended with the death of police officers and 9 civilians, according to official figures.

According to official information, the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights has admitted into court the case on La Oroya, and is holding Peru's government as responsible for crimes against humanity for allowing Doe Run Peru to poison the population of La Oroya with pollution.

The lawsuit was filed by a group of international NGO's, such as the Center for Human Rights (CEDHA), Earthjustice and the Inter American Association for Environmental Defense (AIDA), with the support of the Peruvian Society of Environmental Law, against the Peruvian State.

One of the reasons alleged for accepting the demand are “the lack of commitment and actions to meet the minimum acceptable environmental standards,” in La Oroya, a city listed among the Top Ten Ranking of the most polluted cities in the world.

Doe Run Peru, the company which currently operates in La Oroya one of the largest metal-smelters in the hemisphere, lost its Environmental Certification (that had been granted in 2006 by TUV Rheinland Group auditors) last March.

Peru authorities postpone military parade due to AH1N1 influenza

LivinginPeru.com
Isabel Guerra

Peru's Health Minister Oscar Ugarte has just announced via Radio Capital that the traditional military parade, a part of Peru's independence celebrations, has been suspended, taking into account the quick spread of AH1N1 in the country.

This is a decision taken by Peru's Council of Ministers' Presidency (PCM).

"We have considered that, due to the nature of this event, that usually gathers more than 150,000 people, it would be wiser to cancel it, in order to try to avoid the spread of this virus," he said to Radio Capital.

Peru's Defense Minister, on the other side, remarked that "this is parade is a tradition," so it's not going to be suspended, but postponed to another date, instead probably in September, in coordination with Peru's Health Ministry (Minsa).
