Peru provides technological support in health for Unasur countries

Andina

Peru provides technological support in health for Unasur countriesFor the first time ever, Peru will provide sustained technological support in the health field for countries of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), especially regarding the production of serums against spider bites and the treatment of some diseases such as multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.

The Director of the National Institute of Health, Anibal Velasquez, pointed out that the technological assistance will be discussed in the meeting of representatives of health institutes of Unasur countries, being held in Lima from March 9 to 11.

In this event, the Network of National Institutes of Health of Unasur will be created, aimed at identifying the strengths and weaknesses of institutions of every country in order to determine the technological cooperation action plan to be implemented.

“We have production plants of immunosera against snake and spider venom and given that Chile does not have them, we export to that country and even on the occasion of the earthquake we have donated to this country 1,000 doses, because many walls have fallen so there must be many spiders,” he added.

He emphasized that Peru can contribute with its experience in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and bartonellosis, a disease that only occurs in Peru, but that may happen in other neighboring countries.

Hospitals in Peru will resume free distribution of morning-after pills

Peru's Health Minister Oscar Ugarte announced that public hospitals will resume distributing the morning-after pill, since international research requested by his department concludes that the pill is not a method of abortion.

The World Health Organization reports that the morning-after pill does not have an abortive effect, Ugarte said.

The minister informed that he has signed a resolution to authorize the free distribution of this pill in all public health facilities nationwide. The resolution will come into effect on Wednesday, March 10.

Ugarte pointed out that last October's Constitutional Court suspension of free distribution of the pill included the Health Ministry's responsibility to prove the pill does not act as a method of abortion, and the World Health Organization's report fulfills the court-ordered obligation.

Two doctors who amputated the healthy leg of an 86-year-old man in a social security hospital were fired today, under the charges of “serious misconduct.”

The doctors Álex Tapia Tarifa and Rubén Dulanto Santa Cruz, working at Alberto Sabogal Hospital (Callao), were found responsible of causing irreparable damage on Jorge Villanueva Morales.

Villanueva was supposed to undergo the amputation of his infected right leg, but the doctors took the healthy left one.

In the end, when they realized that they had made a mistake, the doctors had to amputate the other foot anyway.

“They both will have to face legal actions,” said the Executive President of Peru's social security hospitals, Fernando Barrios.

Peru creates open online list of medicines' prices

LivinginPeru.com
Isabel Guerra

Peru's Health Ministry launched a web page where all the consumers can check the most convenient place to buy their medicines and find the best prices, reported Minister Óscar Ugarte.

The web page, http://www.app.minsa.gob.pe/sismedprecios is intended to give the customers “more information to be in better conditions to decide about their purchases.”

According to Peru's laws, doctors are obliged to prescript medicines specifying the main ingredient generic name; but there the common use among health professionals is to recommend medicines by their brand names, usually the most widely known and advertised.

This web page will allow searching for a medicine's generic name and find a list of its different brand names and presentations available in the local market, including their prices in each and every pharmacy throughout the country.
