Luis Castañeda, the mayor of Lima, happily got behind the wheel of one of the new natural gas buses that is to transport up to 180 passengers across Peru's capital. The
mayor introduced three models of buses that will be circulating through Lima in another year. The buses have everything from reserved seating to flat screen televisions.

Over 1,500 delegates, which are to take part in APEC meetings in Arequipa, were received with joy and jubilee by the city's people. A colorful parade was held in honor of the representatives that would be attending meetings in the "White City". The mayor of the province of Arequipa, Simón Balbuena Marroquín, made sure to take part in the festivities and welcome the international representatives, who are representing 21 different countries around the world.

Lima's Grand Central Bus Station is to be complete by the end of 2009 and will have 300 natural gas buses running through it, said Armando Molina, a representative of the Municipality of Lima. He explained that the project was 60 percent complete and estimated that the majority of the underground bus station itself would be complete by the end of September. It was announced that the park above the underground station, Paseo de los Héroes Navales, would be complete and opened to the public by the end of this month.

The National Police's special tactics unit or SUAT (Subunidad de Acciones Tácticas) has opened an office at Jorge Chavez International Airport to provide the EU-LAC delegates that are to arrive to the Andean country with the utmost security. The SUAT team is trained in handling hostage, terrorist and other emergency situations. Colonel Carlos Bamonde Ganduillia, the head of airport security in Peru, affirmed that for an airport to be level A-1, it must have a unit that can respond to these emergency situations. Jorge Chavez is now listed as an A-1 airport.

Peru's President Alan Garcia was present today at the signing ceremony in which Peru Copper exercised its option to invest in the Toromocho mining project, which is located to the east of Lima in the mountainous region of Junin. The $2 billion investment will be financed by the China Development Bank and the Aluminum Corporation of China - Chinalco. It was reported that the Toromocho mining project could increase Peru's copper output 25 percent. Garcia affirmed that the project would also create at least 5,000 jobs.

People throughout Lima are getting ready for another long weekend. Since Thursday - Labor Day - is a national holiday, the government has declared that Friday will also be a holiday for state workers. Many private companies are joining in and giving workers days off as well. The objective is to give Peruvian residents time to travel and discover the country's treasures. As a consequence of the increasing number of travelers on these occasions, bus companies begin to increase fares. It was reported that tickets are already 40 percent more expensive.

Peru's Prime Minister Jorge del Castillo met with World Bank representatives in Washington D.C. today to discuss sustainable development solutions for countries stricken by poverty. Del Castillo was the main speaker at the inauguration of a fair organized by the World Bank to discuss solutions for the world's poor. The Prime Minister explained Crecer, an anti-poverty plan in Peru to over 100 experts from around the world.

Orient Express, a luxury tourism provider in Peru, reported that high-end tourism in the Andean country would increase 15 percent in 2008. The international company, which recently opened a $1,000 a night resort in Arequipa affirmed that the number of tourists in the world that did not care about how much they were charged was increasing. What is most important is the quality of service, said the luxury tourism company. On the other hand, the company acknowledged that Peru still had to invest in providing this service. It was reported that there were 20 five-star hotels in Lima while there were only a few in other regions such as Cusco and Arequipa.

As a part of International Road Safety Week, Peru's national police will be helping citizens identify possible problems with their vehicles as well as identify improvements that need to be made. One of the services officers will be providing is the painting of license plates. To make sure that all license plates are legible, transit police will be repainting old license plates. This and other services will be available next to Campo de Marte in Jesus Maria from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Medical check ups and informative lectures will also be given.

As a part of plan to make South America its hub, Kimberly Clark inaugurated one of two plants in Lima today. President Garcia congratulated the 1,300 workers that will now be working for the makers of Huggies diapers and Scott towels. The president noted that this was only one of the 43 companies that would be investing in Peru this year. He added that Kimberly Clark had made a $60 million investment in Peru, stating that the company met the highest international standards.
