Peru: Photo of the day - Loans for natural gas buses

COFIDE, the corporation that launched the Mi Taxi program in Lima, announced today that it would finance the purchase of 180 natural gas buses this year. "We hope that all of Lima's public transportation companies will opt for using a cheaper fuel that pollutes less," said the Minister of Energy and Mines Juan Valdivia. COFIDE representatives stated the corporation had already provided a company with 10 natural gas buses, valued over 2.6 million soles. It was reported that the company had purchased the vehicles with an 8 percent down payment.

Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism along with several other companies and associations left APEC representatives in awe when some of the countries finest hand-made products were put on display. Peru's Minister of Foreign Trade Mercedes Araoz accompanied Susan Schwab, the U.S. Trade Representative and other APEC delegates to an exhibition that was held in Arequipa.

Peru: Photo of the day - President Garcia inspects highways

President Alan Garcia traveled to the highland region of Cusco on Monday to inspect the construction of 42 kilometers of highway. The highway, located in the province of La Convencion, is to cost 111 million soled to build. This inspection was the first of a series of inspections Peru's president will perform during this week. He has been scheduled to travel to several of the country's regions to check on the progress being made in the construction of several highways, which has been valued at 3 billion soles.

Peru: Photo of the day - International Potato Day celebrated with Potato Sour

With creative cocktails such as Papa Sour and a variety of stews, one of Lima's largest wholesale markets celebrated International Potato Day. Peruvian dishes made with potatoes such as carapulcra, papa a la huancaína and causa rellena among others were provided for participants to try free of charge. There was a large parade in which natives from Peru's coast, jungle and highlands participated. Lima is not the only region where International Potato Day was celebrated; however, it was also celebrated in Cusco. The region held a series of festivities in honor of the tuber.

Peru: Photo of the day - 3,000 natural gas taxis for Lima

As Peru's government encourages the use of natural gas as vehicle's main source of fuel, the Mi Taxi program has announced that it will provide another 3,000 taxi drivers with new natural gas vehicles. Furthermore, it was reported that the program will not only operate in Lima but is to expand to the province of Ica. There are approximately 250,000 people in Lima that support themselves by driving a taxi.

Peru: Photo of the day - 50,000 new jobs per month

The government is close to having created 1 million jobs at a rate of 50,000 per month, announced Prime Minister Jorge del Castillo in a press conference on Wednesday. "Since this administration began until December 2007, we have 887,000 new jobs registered at a rate of 50,000 per month," said Del Castillo, assuring that by now there were probably more than 1 million new jobs in the country.

Peru: Photo of the day - 20,000 alpacas to receive aid

A group of professionals and specialists are to head from Lima to the southern region of Arequipa to aid 20,000 alpacas which are being affected by extremely low temperatures in Peru's high Andes. The kits that are being prepared for the needy alpacas comprise vitamins, antibiotics, syringes, needles, cotton and other material donated by Minera Bateas mining company. 600 blankets are also being taken to be given to farmers.

Peru: Photo of the day - South America's countries came from Peru

Peru's President Alan Garcia affirmed on Thursday that the Andean country was progressing rapidly because it had a mission and was following a national development plan. The country's head of state made these statements as he led a ceremony in which children in the northern region of San Martin received their own laptops.

"South America's motherland isn't Spain, it's Peru. All the countries came from here. This is where the Inca Empire was and where the only viceroyalty was located," affirmed Garcia. "We are South America's biggest, and if we were before, when can be (the biggest) once again, that is the government's objective and that is what we are going to accomplish for Peru's children."

Peru: Photo of the day - Minister of the Interior back at the stand

Peru's Minister of the Interior, Luis Alva Castro was called before congress again on Wednesday to explain the death of two farmers during protests in February. Police officers are being accused of having killed the two farmers with their rifles. Alva Castro assures that officers only had guns with rubber bullets.

Peru: Photo of the day - The Inca Citadel is only the beginning

According to Fernando Astete, the director of Machu Picchu archaeological park, the famous Inca Citadel atop the mountain is only one of 196 complexes in the area. Furthermore, the director of the park explained that 40 percent of Machu Picchu consisted of Pre-Inca ruins. Astete affirmed that a great deal of the structures belonged to the Killke culture, which inhabited the region before the great Inca Empire was born. He added that the Inca Empire was built over the Killke's archaeological center.
