Peru: Photo of the day - 3,000 natural gas taxis for Lima

As Peru's government encourages the use of natural gas as vehicle's main source of fuel, the Mi Taxi program has announced that it will provide another 3,000 taxi drivers with new natural gas vehicles. Furthermore, it was reported that the program will not only operate in Lima but is to expand to the province of Ica. There are approximately 250,000 people in Lima that support themselves by driving a taxi.

Peru: Photo of the day - 50,000 new jobs per month

The government is close to having created 1 million jobs at a rate of 50,000 per month, announced Prime Minister Jorge del Castillo in a press conference on Wednesday. "Since this administration began until December 2007, we have 887,000 new jobs registered at a rate of 50,000 per month," said Del Castillo, assuring that by now there were probably more than 1 million new jobs in the country.

Peru: Photo of the day - 20,000 alpacas to receive aid

A group of professionals and specialists are to head from Lima to the southern region of Arequipa to aid 20,000 alpacas which are being affected by extremely low temperatures in Peru's high Andes. The kits that are being prepared for the needy alpacas comprise vitamins, antibiotics, syringes, needles, cotton and other material donated by Minera Bateas mining company. 600 blankets are also being taken to be given to farmers.

Peru's President Alan Garcia affirmed on Thursday that the Andean country was progressing rapidly because it had a mission and was following a national development plan. The country's head of state made these statements as he led a ceremony in which children in the northern region of San Martin received their own laptops.

"South America's motherland isn't Spain, it's Peru. All the countries came from here. This is where the Inca Empire was and where the only viceroyalty was located," affirmed Garcia. "We are South America's biggest, and if we were before, when can be (the biggest) once again, that is the government's objective and that is what we are going to accomplish for Peru's children."

Peru: Photo of the day - Minister of the Interior back at the stand

Peru's Minister of the Interior, Luis Alva Castro was called before congress again on Wednesday to explain the death of two farmers during protests in February. Police officers are being accused of having killed the two farmers with their rifles. Alva Castro assures that officers only had guns with rubber bullets.

Peru: Photo of the day - The Inca Citadel is only the beginning

According to Fernando Astete, the director of Machu Picchu archaeological park, the famous Inca Citadel atop the mountain is only one of 196 complexes in the area. Furthermore, the director of the park explained that 40 percent of Machu Picchu consisted of Pre-Inca ruins. Astete affirmed that a great deal of the structures belonged to the Killke culture, which inhabited the region before the great Inca Empire was born. He added that the Inca Empire was built over the Killke's archaeological center.

Peru: Photo of the day - Garcia and Bachelet enjoy lunch together

After taking the official group picture, EU-LAC leaders and delegates had lunch inside Peru's National Museum at 1:15 p.m. President Alan Garcia sat next to Chile's President Michelle Bachelet. It was reported that they had an extensive and pleasant conversation. President Garcia brought the summit to a close at 6:15 p.m. A press conference is to be held at 7:30 p.m. and the delegates will head to the government palace for dinner at 9 p.m.

Peru: Spectacular fireworks display for EU-LAC delegates

Peru's government held a special ceremony Thursday evening at the Government Palace, accompanied by a spectacular fireworks show to welcome the delegates that had arrived to the Andean country for the 5th European Union, Latin American and Caribbean Summit. Angela Merkel, Germany's first female chancellor, and her group of delegates observed the light show from the Palace's Courtyard of Honor. Since the fireworks were launched from a nearby hill, they could be seen from different places in Peru's capital.

Peru: Photo of the day - Illegal gun shop raided

National police in the northern city of Chiclayo raided a black market gun shop that modified and sold weapons to criminals. According to police, the gun shop had rifles, shotguns, pistols, ammunition and weapons of war, among others - all of which had had their serial numbers scraped off. Police chief Victor Ordinola Ruiz affirmed that the shop was an "armory for criminals".

Peru: Photo of the day - People's Summit begins at UNI

The third annual "People's Summit" officially began today at the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI) in Lima. As world leaders are gathering for the 5th Annual EU-LAC summit, national authorities in Peru have gotten together for what has been dubbed the People's Summit. It was reported that several delegates that are to attend the EU-LAC summit will also be present at the People's Summit. Leaders from Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Cyprus are to attend this summit.
