Peru's Santiago Acasiete part of one of the best defenses in Spanish soccer

Acasiete's Almería is one of the four teams, behind Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla, with less goals against in the first six rounds of La Liga Primera.

Despite being 13th and having only one win, three draws and two defeats in the Spanish tournament, Almería so far has one of the more solid back line of the Liga Primera, only bettered by Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla.

Santiago Acasiete is one of the defenders of Almería, which had been beaten in only six times. The web site Diario AS highlighted Acasiete's performance along his teammates, and assures this is one of the best season beginning since they arrived to the first division in 2007.

"The total value of the transfers of Almería defenders is not superior to five million euros. So, we don't value them in money, but in performance. Alves, Chico, Acasiete and Pellerano are among the best defenses in the Liga" says the web site.

Acasiete is the more experienced player from all them: "This is not only defense work. The whole team defendes al right. That's the secret".

Canadian fighter Olivia Gerula would be the next challenger of Peruvian boxing world champion Kina Malpartida. Kina “Dinamite” Malpartida will have to defend her WBA title (maybe in Peru again) in no less than four months.

According to Malpartida’s manager Gonzalo Larrain, “it is likely that Kina’s next challenger would be Canadian boxer Gerula Olivia, who is at the top of this list.”

According to WBA Rules, this time they will choose the challenger and place for the fight.

Larrain remarked that Lima has everything it takes to host a WBA title fight again as it made a very good impression on the boxing organization’s representatives who arrived in the Peruvian capital.

The second phase of the National Center for Agricultural and Forest Biotechnology (CNBAS) will require an investment of approximately US$30 million in the 2010-2012 period, reported project manager Wiliam Vivanco.

With this project, Peru seeks to increase protection and use of the country's biodiversity, which will also serve for trade negotiations, he said.

“The first phase, which is state-funded, aims to strengthen the Peruvian National Institute for Agrarian Innovation (INIA) capacities in equipments, labs and human resources to meet the biosecurity objective in the agricultural sector,” said Vivanco.

He remarked that in a favorable context, the second phase should start by the second quarter of 2010, financed by an external loan.

“We will also have the strategical support of the Interamerican Institute of Agricultural Cooperation (IICA),” Vivanco noted.

Peru to launch a nanosatellite in 2010.

Andina

Peru’s National University of Engineering (Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería, uni) will launch in November, 2010, the first Peruvian nanosatellite into space, which is 10 centimeters (3,94 inches) per side, and will be used to take pictures of earth’s surface for climate, forestry and archaeological research.

The small square-shaped satellite was named "Chasqui I” and manufactured using applied spatial technology capable of withstanding extreme temperatures in space, ranging from -40 to 100 degrees Celsius.

Since there is not a launch pad in Peru, the 2.2-pound nanosatellite will be put into orbit from a foreign country: from the Kursk State Technical University in Russia.

The Peruvian nanosatellite is expected to operate for at least two months in orbit, and once in space, it will be able to completely orbit the earth in only one hour, reported the director of the Center for Communication and Information Technologies of UNI, Doris Rojas.

Living in Peru
Israel J. Ruiz

In an effort to improve the sport of football in the country, Peru’s government is preparing a bill that proposes to restructure professional football clubs in the Andean country.

If the bill is passed, football clubs in Peru will be obligated to be changed into corporations, as it has been done in other countries around the world.

The country’s Education, Culture and Sports Commission is currently working on a bill that has as its primary focus to change Peru’s football clubs into corporations.

According to the commission, this will help and strengthen the clubs so they can fulfill their duties.

Another of the bill’s points indicates that clubs across the country would have to have a minimum amount of money.

In addition, the bill states that money would have to be invested in the country’s youth and junior teams.

It was also proposed that coaches who do not do a good job be penalized.

The bill was described as an effort to try to save Peruvian football.

Peru an ideal spot to enjoy the peak of the Eta Aquarid meteor shower

Living in Peru
Israel J. Ruiz

Because the earth will be passing through the dust released by Halley's Comet, people in Peru and in many other countries will be able to enjoy a meteor shower at its peak.

María Luisa Aguilar, an astronomer at the University of San Marcos has assured that people across Peru will be able to enjoy the Eta Aquarid meteor shower best if they observe it from places where there is not much artificial light.

She stated that an area away from the city would be best.

The Eta Aquarid meteor shower, which peaks in 2008 on Monday May 5 and Tuesday May 6, is the first of two showers that occur each year as bits of Halley's Comet streak into the Earth's atmosphere.

María Luisa Aguilar explained that it would be best to view the meteor shower while lying flat on the ground.

"You'll see it better because your face will be directly facing the sky," said the astronomer.

The strength of the Eta Aquarid display varies from year to year but it is believed that this year's meteor shower will be especially good because viewers in the southern hemisphere will be able to see 60 to 70 meteors per hour.

It has also been reported that 2008 is a good year to view the meteor shower because of the new Moon, which means lunar glare will not be a factor.
