Peru to participate at 2010 Olympic Winter Games

Three Peruvians athletes will compete at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, to be held from today until Feb. 28 in Vancouver, Canada.

This is the first time Peru will be at these Olympic Games, along with countries like Cayman Islands, Colombia, Ghana and Pakistan.

Peruvian cross-country skier Roberto Carcelén, 39, who lives in Seattle, USA, will participate under the category Cross-Country Skiing.

Manfred Oettl Reyes (16) and his sister Ornella Oettl Reyes (18) will also represent Peru in the Alpine Skiing category.

Cross-Country Skiing competition will start on Feb. 15, and some 305 athletes will participate, and Alpine Skiing competition started on Saturday.

82 countries are participating at these Winter Olympics.

Peru's Aurich lost to Estudiantes at Libertadores Cup

Juan Aurich lost to Estudiantes for the group 3 of the Libertadores cup at Centenario de Quilmes stadium.

Mauro Boselli scored the first Argentine goal from a penalty kick awarded by referee Salvio Fagundes.

The Peruvians got the equalizing goal after thanks to Luis Tejada, who connected a pass form Colombian Ciciliano.

German Re at 44th, Boselli again at 59th and Leandro Gonzales at 89th sealed the Argentine victory. Peruvian Roberto Guizasola was red-carded.

Estudiantes, for time Libertadores Cup champion is considering this competition a priority, since coach Alejandro Sabella and the players wants to get back to the World Club Championship.

Peru's Alianza Lima beats Bolivar at Libertadores Cup match

Alianza Lima had a dream debut at Libertadores Cup and did an almost impossible task: to win a game at a high altitude place: they defeated Bolivar 3-1.

The first half was an even game, with Peruvian goalkeeper Salomon Libman offering great performance. The second have had more action with scoring opportunities for both sides.

Jose Carlos Fernandez scored the first goal for Alianza at minute 72 thanks to a counter attack.

Three minutes later the same player got the second one after winning a ball inside the Bolivian penalty area.

At 88th the referee awarded a penalty kick for Bolivar and Brazilian William Ferreyra scored for the Bolivians, but at 90th Johnnier Montaño got the final 3-1 after a counter attack with a great goal.

Alianza plays next Thursday at home against present champions Estudiantes de la Plata at Matute.

Libertadores Cup action to begin for Peruvian soccer teams

Alianza Lima will play this afternoon against Bolivar at La Paz, for Group 3 of Libertadores Cup.

The Peruvian team gets back to international competition after two years.

Before flying to Bolivia, coach Gustavo Costas said he wants to offers supportes a good participation, since Alianza couldn't get a single point in 2007.

Argentine Estudiantes de la Plata and Juan Aurich will play the other game of the group next Thursday. Aurich's Coach Suárez said he doesn't fearEstudiantes, present Libertadores champions.

"My team is working well, and is mentally strong," said Luis Fernando Suarez.

Universitario de Deportes will face Blooming tomorrow at Santa Cruz from 8:30 p.m. for Group 4 of the Cup.

The Peruvian champion will fly to Bolivia today and will have a training sessions by night at Ramón Tahuichi Aguilera stadium. Uruguayan forward Víctor Píriz Alves, will stay in Lima to finish his recovery from an injury.

Peru: Sports journalist Emilio Laferranderie "El Veco" dies at 78

The popular sports journalist Emilio Laferranderie, aka “El Veco,” died in Lima at 78 years of age, after suffering a cardiac arrest in a local private hospital, reported local media.

“El Veco” started his long career in his home country, Uruguay, and then continued it in Peru, where he published the books "Oído a la música” (Listen to the music) and “Fútbol es pasión” (Soccer is passion), publications that reunite his texts and profiles.

He arrived in Lima in August 1982, and after four months working for “El Comercio” newspaper, he received an offer from Panamericana Television, so he decided to stay, along with his family.

His motto was “Oído a la música,” a phrase that he created and made popular repeating it just before sharing news and commentaries.

"El Veco" was a columnist of El Comercio and was the host of the program “El Show del Veco” on RadioProgramas del Peru (RPP).

Soccer players from Peru scored for their European teams

Claudio Pizarro scored a goal for his team, but Werder Bremen lost 4-3 to Borussia Monchengladbach. Bremen was about to get a heroic draw to Borussia, but they couldn't.

Reus, Colautti and Bobadilla (twice) scored for Borussia, while Ozil, Pizarro and Frings did the same for Werder Bremen.

Pizarro got back in action after a two weeks absence due to injuries and flu. With this goal the Peruvian forward is nine goals short from the historic goal scoring record for a foreign forward in the Bundesliga.

After this game, Bremen is sixth with 28 points.

Jefferson Farfan's Schalke 04 defeated Hoffenheim 2-0 and is third at the Bundesliga, one point behind absolut leader Bayern München. Gelsenkirchenteam got the triumph thanks to goals by Kevin Kuranyi and Lukas Schmitz. Farfan played all the match, while Carlos Zambrani didn't play.

Nolberto Solano made his debut on the English second division in a draw between Leicester City and Newcastle United, his present and his former team.

Solano played only six minutes, and he got into the game at minute 84, substituting teammate Fryatt.

At 89th, Solano was about to score a goal and the winning one through a free kick.

There was expectance at Solano debut with Leicester in a game that marked his comeback at English soccer against his beloved Newcaste United where he spent several years, after playing at Greece and at Peru with Universitario.

Olivia Gerula says she will fight Kina Malpartida in Peru

Canadian boxer Olivia Gerula says she will travel to Peru to fight WBA champion Kina Malpartida.

“I will fight any worthy opponent that is put in front of me,” says Gerula in a press statement. “It would be an honor to meet [Malpartida] in the ring to unify our titles and that includes doing so in Peru.”

Gerula, the WBC super featherweight champion, was clarifying news that suggested she was afraid to fight in Peru, Malpartida’s home country. On Jan. 12 a Winnipeg newspaper quoted her as saying “we might not make it safely out of Peru.”

“There was never any disrespect meant to the Peruvian people,” Gerula says in her statement. “I would relish the opportunity to visit such a beautiful country.”

In email correspondence with LivingPeru.com, Gerula’s manager Butch Gottlieb said there are still no plans for a fight, but “team Gerula would love to start negotiations with Malpartida’s promoter and get this fight done.”

Kina Malpartida recently told Peruvian press that her next WBA title defense will “definitely be in Peru.” On Dec. 5 Malpartida defended her title for the second time, beating British challenger Lindsey Scragg in 10 rounds by decision.

Peru: Ancon to host first 2010 Aquathlon event

Tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 24) the Ancon Yatch Club will host the first 2010 Aquathlon local event, featuring the best exponents of this sport in Peru

The Peruvian Aquathlon circuit consists of a 2.5 km run, one km swim, and a 2.5 km run, and a promotional event for youngsters is also scheduled.

The official Peru's triathlon team, who will participate in the Triathlon Pan American Cup on Feb. 7, have confirmed their attendance: Rodrigo Medrano, Sandra Lazo, Ricardo Nuñez, Eduardo Noriega, Karol Gamarra, Eduardo Ramírez, Italo Garcia, Dereck Mori, and Sebastian de Vinatea.

Dutch master soccer team to play against Peru in Lima and Iquitos

Dutch master soccer team, coached by Ruud Gullit, will play against its Peruvian counterpart on Feb. 19 in Callao, and on Feb. 21 in Iquitos.

The first game will be staged at Miguel Grau Stadium, Callao, at, 8:00 p.m The Peruvian team will feature local legends like Hector Chumpitaz, Alfonso Yañez, Roberto Martinez, Miguel Miranda, among others.

The second game of the “Clockwork Orange” will take place at Max Augustin Stadium in Iquitos starting 3:30 p.m., against the master team of Iquitos, with the participation of Cesar Cueto, Teofilo Cubillas and Julio Cesar Uribe.

Along with these matches, there will be an international seminar conducted by Ruud Gullit and scheduled for Jan. 20 at 9:00 a.m. at El Pueblo Hotel.

Other famous Dutch players are announced to come, such as Patrick Kluivert, Ronald de Boer and twins Willy and Rene van de Kerkhof.

The event will benefit Adesa, a Peruvian-Dutch civil organization that fights against poverty in Peru.

Ticket prices range from S/.10 to 100 soles.

Peru Dakar 2010 team finished the rally

The Peruvian team at Dakar 2010, led by Fernando Ferrand del Busto (65 años) and Fernando Ferrand Malatesta (38) finished the rally raid 15 days after the departure.

The rally, that was celebrated this year in South America (in Argentina and Chile) is known as the hardest and most difficult of its kind, and many teams with budgets significantly higher than the Peruvian one were not able to reach the finish line.

Driving a Toyota FJ Cruiser, the Peruvians ended up in the 47th position out of 57 competitors that finished the more than 9,000 km rally, while other 75 teams gave up and could not finish the race.

“This is a very important result that puts Peru in the maps of off road competitions,” said Roberto Argandoña, from a local specialized magazine.
