Information on the restoration of Choquequirao presented in Paris

The First Lady of Peru, Elaine Karp, presented on Monday a report on the restoration work, that is being completed thanks to financing from the French government, on the Inca ruins of Choquequirao, near Cusco. The first Lady emphasized the importance of this site and the importance of continuing its archeological restoration.
The First Lady considers this Franco-Peruvian project, that seeks to develop tourism in this poor and isolated region, a success because the site has received more tourists in one month than it used to receive in a year.
Karp expressed her desire that the next government will continue to support the project.
Archeologists have confirmed that the Incas had lived at this site, at over 3,000 meters, since the 14th century and it could have supported a population of over 1,000.

Huaca Huantille or the depredation of cultural heritage

During decades the Huaca Huantille, earthern building belonging to the Huari Culture, was squattered by a group of families who destroyed slowly part of our cultural heritage. There were 50 families who lived inside the archaeological, some of them had property titles given to them by the last military government, which was “socialist”.
The National Institute of Culture (INC- Instituto Nacional de Cultura) won the rights over the archaelogical site after a process at the Juditial Power, though they were unable to begin with the restoration project of the site due to the families living there and the thieves and drug addicts using the area as hiding-place.
Finally the Municipality of Magdalena has paid each family an amount of money, so they accepted to leave the archaeological place. Some of them left yesterday and some will leave today, the moving was done in a peaceful way.

Cusco is the city with highest percentage of mistreated women

It is not a reason to be proud of, it is the cruel reality we live in every day. In a survey made by WHO (World Health Organization) in 2002 the results were alarming, one out of two women are abused in some way in Lima, and two out of three in Cusco, this means that 69% of women in Cusco and 51% of women in Lima have been abused at least once in their lives. A slap on the face is the most common agression, beating, pushing, pulling the hair and sexual abuse are the other examples of mistreat: Two million women are victims of some type of abuse in Peru each year, though there are only 30 thousands who report them to the police. The agressors are the husbands and partners who often think they are victims of infidelities. The results have not changed since 2002.

According to Miguel Angel Ramos Padilla, specialist in masculinity and gender violence from the famous university Cayetano Heredia these percentages place Cusco at the first place and Lima in the third place compared to other cities in Bangladesh, Tanzania and Ethiopia. The most regrettable says Ramos Padilla is that there are no policies to give solution to these problems, the State is unable to handle this issue, therefore there are many women who do not report the abuses to the police. It is not only the slowness in the process, but the way the responsibles to write the reports treat the victims in the police stations and others. Ramos Padilla indicates that acording to a survey 65% of the police women are mishandled by their husbands or partners, who frequently are also policemen.

Which are the reasons for so much violence? According to Ramos Padilla there are process of socialization which repress emotions and feelings. The repression, the fear, the compassion and the shame among others generate fury and anger when the agressor faces a case of infidelity or is suspicious about it.

In the other hand, cases like the one of the nephew of president Toledo, who had no punishment after he abused a woman, strengthens impunity.

Machu Picchu in danger

According to an article published in the magazine Newsweek, the Inca city of Machu Picchu might disappear. Machu Picchu is consider one of the Seven Wonders of he World, nevertheless the Peruvian authorities do not agree in the policies to preserve this fantastic archaelogical site:

“The ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu is in danger of becoming a victim of its own popularity. Built around 1460 and discovered by American historian Hiram Bingham in 1911, the breathtaking and well-preserved mountain ruins have become Peru’s most popular tourist attraction, drawing half a million visitors every year. The site’s 200 buildings, located in a geological fault zone, are in a precarious position to begin with. Constant foot traffic has made matters worse, wearing down and destabilizing the ancient stone foundations. Development near the site is exacerbating the problem of landslides, which threaten to dislodge Machu Picchu from its alpine perch. To stem the tide, Peru recently limited the number of visitors to 500 per day and closes the site for one month every year to repair damaged trails. But that may be too little too late.”

The potatoes ARE Peruvian!

Chile on its attempt to promote Chilean products declared that the “Potatoes were originally from Chile”. This declaration produced several reactions among the Peruvian scientists and the population because the potatoes are Peruvian!
The Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affaires Oscar Maurtua declared that according to an investigation from the Department of Agriculture of the US, were they studied the DNA of 261 types of wild potatoes and 98 type of cultivatable potatoes, it was concluded that the origin of the potato is only in the Southern part of Peru.
“The cultivation of potatoes and its technological development is one of the contributions of Peru to mankind” said Oscar Maurtua.
This is not the first attempt of appropriation from our neighbours from the South, they said that the Pisco is originally from Chile…our fruit called “chirimoya” is theirs with the name of “Chilimoya”, the dessert “Suspiro de Limeña” is also theirs! Though all of them are from Peru, we will keep on protecting our products!

Father Hubert Lanssiers changed the life of thousands of prisoners in Peru’s jails. He showed them a way to redeem themselves: By creating art. Called the “warrior of forgiveness”, this Belgian who at the age of ten saw how his mother was shot during the Second World War, made out of his life a life full of immeasurable generosity and forgiveness.
Thousands of people mourn him, he died too early at the age of 76, after a rich and outstanding life were he worked fiercely and honestly for human rights, perhaps he is the person who did more for human rights in Peru. He worked very hard to get amnesty of 743 innocent people accused of terrorism, he helped people who were rejected by their own families, he created a center were the art crafts made by prisoners are sold.
Some of the prisoners said “He did not talk too much about religion, but his words could change your life and the vision of the world, he was a kind of modern saint”.
He was lucid and straight, his human qualities were recognized by politicians, journalists, intellectuals and all the anonymous people for whom he worked and helped. During 10 years he shared Christmas with the prisoners at the Penal de Chorrillos. Nevertheless there were people who liked to do his life difficult and block his way, though he always worked for justice, truth and love.
