At present, six people is the official death toll of the collision that took place last Tuesday near San José de Pacache, on Ucayali River (in eastern Peru) authorities said.

While another 15 people still remain missing, survivors interviewed by CPN radio attributed the collision to heavy fog and to the inadequacy of the lights on one of the vessels, called “Super Salas.”

They also said that the other vessel, called “Milagritos,” was overloaded.

Specialists from Peruvian Navy will arrive to the place to try to determine the real causes of the accident and establish the responsibilities.

The owner of the “Super Salas,”, Justina Salas, says that the “Milagritos” crew had been drinking alcohol the previous day.

Peru: Lima's transportation on strike today

LivinginPeru.com
Isabel Guerra

Public transportation's workers in Lima are observing today a 24 hours strike, in protest against the new high fines established in the New Traffic Code to come into effect on July 21st.

About 60,000 bus drivers and 200,000 taxicab and "colectivos" (cars serving small routes as buses) drivers did not attend work early this morning.

Only a few buses were seen on Lima streets, whose drivers charged 100% than usual for the fares.

The taxi drivers who are actually working are also charging fees much higher than the usual (in Lima taxis don't use taximeters).

The most affected population however are the workers living in the surroundings of Lima, who had problems to get to their workplaces.

Due to this, the Peru's Ministry of Labor authorized a 2-hours delay in the entrance for all the workers.

Peru's roads going back to normal

The traffic circulation on the roads of Peru's north amazonian provinces' roads has just been resumed and returned to normal, since the natives lifted the blockades after the repeal of the decrees 1090 and 1064.

The blockades and stoppage had lasted for more than two months, generating enormous economic losses to local business and agriculture.

The commissioner of Yurimaguas, capital of Alto Amazonas (Loreto), reported that the natives cleared the road that connects this city with Tarapoto (San Martin). According to San Ramón (Junín region) police station, the traffic by the Tarma-La Merced section of the Central Highway was restored last night.

Peru to encourage railway development

The Ministry of Transports and Comunicaciones (MTC) hopes that the final studies for a projected railroad that would connect Huancavelica and Cusco will be ready this year.

The Minister, Enrique Cornejo, said that “we are retaking the way to railway development. Years ago the railroad was a powerful instrument for integration and development of the country, and for diverse reasons it paused.”

The train route of the Huancayo-Huancavelica, locally known as “Tren Macho” (“Macho Train”) is currently under State administration and undergoing a rehabilitation process, that will conclude in the second semester of this year.

“Our policy now is to promote the railway development, but the private investment will have a fundamental role in this project”, Cornejo emphasized.

Peru's Government restarted the feasibility studies for the Trans Andean Tunnel (which would cross the Peruvian central highlands), a project that would require an investment between US $ 90 million and US $ 180 million dollars.

The Concessions General Director from Peru's Transports Ministry, Hjalmar Marangunich, said that “the railway system has great strengths and we must exploit them."

According to some studies, this tunnel would allow traveling between Lima and Huancayo in only four hours. The first phase of the project, which includes the railway already connecting the mentioned cities, has been granted in concession to Ferrovías Central Andino (FCA).

The route between Huancayo and Huancavelica is supposed to be granted in concession before the second half of 2009.

Toyota to introduce first hybrid car in Peru in July

Andina

Japanese car manufacturer Toyota will introduce its first hybrid car in the Peruvian market this July, Toyota del Perú's executive chairman Hiroaki Fujiwara announced Wednesday at the Government Palace in Lima.

He said Toyota will have this year a batch of 50 units of the Prius model worth 37,000 dollars each.

There are currently two million hybrid cars in the world, which have avoided the emission of half a million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the environment, and 80 percent of them are Toyota, he detailed.

Fujiwara explained that this eco-car model combines a gasoline engine with a clean and quiet electric motor.

"The Toyota Prius emits 40 percent fewer CO2 emissions than any conventional vehicle and it has a performance of over 62 miles per gallon," he said. Fujiwara also announced that the company will plant a tree for each person who tests the vehicles as its corporate responsibility program seeks to protect the environment.

Peru bus drivers prohibited from filling gas tanks with passengers on board

LivinginPeru.com

In an effort to save time, it is not uncommon to see or even be on a bus in Lima that stops by a gas station to fill up on fuel while passengers are on board.

To control and try to bring this dangerous practice to an end, the country's Ministry of Transportation (MTC) has declared that public transport drivers will be fined 852 soles if they are caught filling their tanks at gas stations with passengers on board.

Peru's MTC has established that this is a very serious offense and assured drivers would immediately be fined if found attempting to save time in this manner.

The new law will begin being enforced by transit officers in July and is part of a new plan to tighten up on traffic issues in Lima.

It was reported that bus drivers will also be fined 852 soles if they were caught driving with one of their bumpers missing.

Police officers have been authorized to tow buses in both cases.
