Lima Trade Chamber estimated the internal tourism is likely to register a 12% increase by the end of the year.

Nevertheless, receptive tourism will close 2009 with a 9% drop, even when international arrivals are increasing at the same percentage, said Alvaro Benavides, President of the Committee of Tourism (Comtur).

"We are waiting for the recovery of receptive tourism in the next months, pushed by hotel investments, that hadn't stopped, same as the traffic of passengers at international level," added Benavides.

He also asked for some corrective measures to be taken aiming to avoid the growth rate, both internal and receptive tourism, to drop due to some factors like the predicted "El Niño" for 2010.

Peru: 118 travel agencies in Cusco face penalty for bad services and scams

The penalty that Cusco's Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism has recently imposed to 118 travel agents operating in the City of Cusco, due to providing bad quality services and consigning false addresses, will certainly establish a precedent, according to Hector Velit, past president of APAVIT (Peruvian Association of Travel and Tourism).

Velit thinks that the best way to prevent these infractions from happening again, and to set an standard for Cusco and the whole country as well, is to punish not only the agency, "because they will reopen tomorrow in a different address," but also the owners and the workers.

According Velit, the first sanction (after the first complaint filed on scam charges) should include registering these agencies, so if they recur in this infractions, they can be then definitely closed.

"The reasons are simple: First, these people discredit the services of legal agencies, which causes foreign tourists to blame on all Peruvians. Second, they are aiming to decieve tourists, and that is a criminal offense,” Velit said.

"Two major airlines have asked the MTC to asses the possibility of having a hub at Jorge Chavez International Airport," said Minister Enrique Cornejo.

Currently, Taca and Lan Chile have actually turned Lima into their center of interconnection of passengers with their  destinations.

Peru should have a Tourism Ministry, CANATUR says

LivinginPeru.com
Isabel Guerra

Canatur (Chamber of Tourism) President, Fernando Puga, said that, in his opinion, a Tourism Ministry should be created before a Culture Ministry, due to its importance as an economic activities generator.

He said that this is the best time to discuss the establishment of a ministry dedicated exclusively to tourism, and said objections about allegedly creating more bureaucracy or increasing government spending do not have a real background.

"I do not understand why the president of Peru uses this as an argument for not creating a Tourism Ministry, and at the same time creates an Environment Ministry and a Culture Ministry. Those are sectors that are way behind tourism regarding generator of business and economic activities,” he remarked.
