LAN Peru General Manager, Jorge Vílchez, said that the company is evaluating several alternatives for the promotion of Cusco as a tourist destination still open, and one of them is giving the Lima-Cusco air trip for free.

“We want to say: come to Peru and visit Cusco for free,” he said, explaining that this could be possible if the government starts an important marketing campaign that promotes Cusco abroad,” said Vilchez to TNews.

“Foreign tourists want to see Machu Picchu, and if it is not available then coming to Peru becomes less attractive. But we want them to understand that Peru is much more than only Machu Picchu, and so we are promoting many other destinations nationwide,” he stressed.

He also added that the airline is experiencing an important drop in the demand from foreign tourists, and that some 10,000 reservations have been canceled.

Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister, Martin Perez (in the photo), stated that the losses for the tourism industries in Cusco “are not worth S/. 1.2 billion as some operators have said.”

“It is not possible how much they are worth, really, but I can tell its a lot less than S/. 1.2 billion,” he pointed out, explaining that “the whole country receives US $ 2.4 billion in tourism revenues per year, and if we change it to soles and divide it per 12 months, it would be S/. 560 million. That would imply all the tourism in the country, and even that way we don't get any closer to S/.1.2 billion,” said Perez, according to Tnews.

He also explained that tourists in Peru are being suggested to visit other circuits than Machu Picchu, and that travel operators are developing an intense campaign to avoid a retraction in the sector.

The regional President of Cusco, Hugo González Sayán, announced a half-price campaign, that will offer air fares, hotels and restaurants at half their normal rates to Peruvian tourists.

The campaign is intended to sustain and boost the domestic tourism in Cusco, since Machu Picchu is going to be closed for a few weeks.

The purpose is to promote tourist attractions in Cusco such as Sacsayhuaman, Chincheros Tipon, Puca Pucara, as well as the historical-religious circuit, as well as another places that due to their high costs are usually not available to domestic tourists.

According to the regional authority, the campaign is mainly targeted at domestic visitors, because the citadel of Machu Picchu is still the main destination for foreign tourists.

“The campaign for foreign tourists is stressing that Cusco is still there, and that there are a lot more places to visit, not only Machu Picchu,” said González.

Isabel Guerra

Four-star and Five-star hotels located in Cusco are considering the possibility of reducing their normal rates since April, in order to attract more domestic tourists, since the foreign demand has been affected by the recent climate events, reported Tnews.

Tibisay Monsalve, General Manager of the Hotels Peruvian Society, told Andina news agency “unfortunately, due to recent events that we all know, the hotel bookings have dropped and this was unavoidable. Now we need to work along with the Peruvian state in order to get back this tourism destination to its normal activity.”

Monsalve stressed that the strategy in the short term should focus on domestic tourism and on neighboring countries, in order to sustain the demand.

Peru: Machu Picchu Pueblo Mayor claims it is "not chaos"

LivinginPeru.com
Isabel Guerra

Machu Picchu Pueblo Mayor, Edgar Miranda, said that his office is dedicated to restoring the order in the area, and that, like many other districts in Peru, Machu Picchu is prone to suffer from climatic events and natural disasters.

“We are working in organizing the town, asphalting streets, supervising constructions, and we expect to uniformize the ceilings and the colors of the houses,” said Miranda, quoted by TNews.

He said that during the last days media attention has been focused on the “inability” and “inaction” of local authorities regarding preparedness for disasters, but he said that this topic is included in Mayors' agendas.

“It is not correct saying that Machu Picchu is a chaos. We are a district that provides services, and in recent years it's been an improvement in these services' quality,” added Miranda.

He also remarked that now the works are focused on restoring the road between the town and Puente Ruinas, the train station: “this might take up to 20 days,” he said.
