On Thursday, former presidential advisor Vladimiro Montesinos received a new prison sentence.

Montesinos received six years in prison for the embezzlement of state funds, which he used to finance the ‘Vamos Vecino’ political campaign.

According to Peru21, Montesinos was also ordered to pay 8 million soles in damages (about $3 million).

During the hearing, which was held at the Callao Naval Base, Montesinos accepted the charges he was accused of.

However, Peruvian law stipulates that sentences are not cumulative, but instead prisoners only serves the longest sentence, which in Montesinos’ case is 25 years in prison, for crimes against humanity, Peru21 reported.
