The Ministry of Culture in Peru announced on Wednesday that the recently damaged Nazca Lines by a truck who accidentally ran over them can be repaired.
“The truck caused medium level damages, that means that they are repairable”, told Johnny Isla, responsible for this archaeological site, under the administration of the Ministry of Culture, to El Comercio. “We have trained people that can restore the terrain surface and fix the traces of the damaged geoglyphs”, he added.
It was informed that the vehicle entered the Pampas de Nazca on January 27 around kilometer 424 of the Panamericana Sur road, and in spite of the signaling, drove over several of the geoglyphs, damaging them.
The people in charge of the security in the Pampas de Nazca intervened the driver right away and proceeded to report to the National Police of Peru in Nazca.
El Universal reported that the vehicle was a cargo truck that left prints in an area of 5 thousand square meters. The driver, identified as Jainer Flores, of 40 years of age, was taken into custody and then released. He has been accused of committing a crime of attempting against archaeological monuments, which is punished with up to six years in prison.
It is believed that Nazca Lines are about 2,000 years old. They consist of geometric and animal shapes carved on the earth that can only be appreciated from above. They were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 and are a very famous tourist attraction for people from all over the world.
