Human Rights Watch (HRW) presented a report to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) about why Peru should revoke the pardon given to Ex-President Alberto Fujimori, informed El Nacional.
“Fujimori’s freedom was a shameful treason to the victims of atrocities in Peru and a serious setback for the rule of law in the country”, said the Director for the Americas of HRW, José Miguel Vivanco in a release.
In this sense, he also explained that they hope for the IACHR not to allow President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK) to use the victims’ rights for political negotiations.
Human Rights Watch also believes that “there are serious reasons to believe that his release was the result of a negotiation due to the growing pressure of Fujimori’s adepts in Congress, including the recent trial to submit him to a political trial”, wrote El Nacional.
This organization also believes that the pardon “did not meet the basic guarantees of impartiality and transparency and it violates Peru’s obligation to investigate, process, and punish human right violations”, according to information from El Nacional.
Alberto Fujimori was serving a 25-year sentence for violation of human rights and last Christmas Eve, PPK granted him a pardon less than halfway through his sentence.
Many protests have taken place since against this decision, some even believing it to be part of a political negotiation with Kuczynski.
HRW’s document was presented to the IACHR to take into consideration when analyzing Fujimori’s release.
