The plan aims to bridge the gap in public spending on telecommunication and transportation projects. These are primarily infrastructure and not social impact based.
Peru’s National Infrastructure Plan for Competitiveness was presented back in September by President Vizcarra. It focuses on 52 public projects around the country. According to Gabriel Daly, the General Director of Private Investment for the Ministry of Economy and Finance, half of these projects are already underway. The goal is for the projects to be completed by 2025. These will promote connectivity and production, boosting the country’s economy.
The investment plan was a highlight topic at the 14th annual Latin American Cities Conference which made a stop in Lima on December 5. At the event, organized by Americas Society/Council of the Americas, international and local experts and stakeholders discussed the plan set out by President Vizcarra. Also discussed were transparent, efficient and sustainable practices within the sector of public infrastructure.
The list includes the second line of Lima’s Metro, the expansion of the Jorge Chavez Airport and the construction of the international Chinchero airport in Cusco.
Public investment in recent years has stagnated. The Odebrecht corruption charges and fluctuating international trade landscape are factors.
