The chancellors of the Grupo de Lima (Lima Group), formed to analyze the political situation in Venezuela, will offer today their opinion about this subject after their scheduled meeting in the Peruvian capital.
They will be discussing the upcoming early presidential elections to take place in the Latin American country on April 22.
“The purpose of this meeting, convened by the Peruvian government, is to evaluate the measures that should be taken before the Venezuelan political situation”, explains El Peruano.
Grupo de Lima signed a document in a meeting celebrated in Santiago de Chile on January 23 that points out that the decision to move the presidential elections to an earlier date makes it impossible to hold democratic, transparent and believable elections, in accordance with international standards, and it contradicts democratic principles for the dialogue between the government and the opposition, El Peruano says.
“Meanwhile, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) called on the international community to use its report on Venezuela in its ‘legal and political efforts’ to seek a way out of this crisis”, explained El Peruano, adding that this is done while calling for pressure for the government let the commission visit the country.
The Grupo de Lima meeting will take place in the Javier Perez Cuellar room in the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega cultural center.
The Venezuelan chancellery announced last Tuesday that Nicolás Maduro, president of Venezuela, will be assisting to the VIII Summit of the Americas, which will take place days before the presidential elections in the country.
Representatives of the Fuerza Popular, Peruanos por el Kambio, Partido Aprista, and Acción Popular parties manifested their rejection to this visit.
