Fernando Menendez Silva, 46, is from Piura and has been held in the Miguel Castro Castro prison for 11 years. While serving his sentence he has found in ceramics the means to “exorcize his inner demons”, as Andina News Agency said.
In the pavilion 1A of the aforementioned prison he works in the Nelson Mandela workshop with other 50 people who have learned how to work ceramics.
“In the prison ceramics has reached high expressions, to such an extent that its artists have specialized as tool makers, grinders, painters, fillers and polishers, whose activities are perfectly recognized by the INPE (National Penitentiary Institute in Peru) and requested by the public who visits the prison”, Menendez told the news agency.
So far, he has managed to sell some of his creations to well-known personalities, such as chef Virgilio Martínez, several diplomats and restaurants.
“I experiment and I create my own colors. Today I am working with high temperature ceramic and for this I had to adapt the oven with which I work”, he told the media, who confessed he learned about this art when he arrived to prison.
