American actress Andie MacDowell arrived in Lima this week, and met with First Lady Nadine Heredia for events celebrating the International Day of the Girl.
MacDowell, Heredia, and Lima Mayor Susana Villaran, attended the launch of the “Because I’m a Girl” campaign in Peru, with an event at Lima’s Plaza Mayor.
The campaign, organized by British NGO Plan International, aims to support millions of girls around the world get the education and skills.
The campaign, she said, aims “to give a voice to children… valuing children, listening to children.”
“I feel that this is a very nice fit for me, to help young girls feel that they have great value,” MacDowell said.
Earlier in the day MacDowell visited the Divino Niño school in Piura, and is scheduled to fly to Cusco later in the day.
October 11 was designated as the International Day of the Girl Child by the UN in an effort to "recognize girls’ rights and highlight the unique challenges girls face worldwide."
