A poetic exploration of beauty, art, nature, and geometry in Lima’s Barranco.
Plenitude of space and motions pure
Over a vitreous indigo bottom
Gracious figures of ignited devotions
Lightly dance the Breath of Venus
Drawing a subtle yet bold Geometry
Staring at the aqueous and infinite gray of the sea in Barranco, pondering the limit of its distant horizon as it blends into the sky, lies one of the most beautiful and almost hidden expressions of love for the city that I have encountered in my walks through Lima.
Its dancing figures, with their dionysiac, vital, erotic movements, may be appreciated at the end of avenida Sáenz Peña, beneath the pergola, if we are to provide mere coordinates which, in regards to the cosmic order invoked by them in silent prayer, will never cease to be somewhat spurious.
But the Sacred, stubornly, has always managed to live among men, amidst the corruptible, and this delicate oeuvre, this dreamy mural, chose to hide in plain sight at the center of Chorrillos’s bay. It will be seen by those with eyes in their soul that may guide them to it.
What a just location! I tell myself. A fine vindication of the beautiful and pure, of that which cannot die, despite bearing witness to the pain distilling yet from the battlefields of yesteryear. Rebellious of human passing, it whispers softly to the walker who, serene thanks to the magic of the Pacific, walks in front of it with slow steps, taking his time.
What is its title, its sense and intentions, or even its author? Useless questions that, ignorant and ignoring, get lost when faced by the elegant intensity of its movements, which, if we are lucky, will set in our hearts and our memories even for an instant. Sad fate, instead, for those who, driving a car while passing thru, must pay attention to mundane things…
