Drag culture has been around for centuries and has evolved with time. It has become more mainstream in recent years, with the success of shows like Drag Race. Although Brunch is not a traditional activity in Lima, people gather at their parent’s house on Sunday mornings to enjoy pan con chicharron and tamales. However, Brunch has become increasingly popular in restaurants in recent years.
Enter The Drag Brunch a new venture by Juanjo Murray, who runs El Itigaynario, a source of LGBTQ+ activities in Lima City, Rehab takes place on Sunday mornings at The Venue by Selina, offering an all-you-can-eat buffet and cocktails to share with friends while enjoying the extravaganza of local Drag Queens. “We want Rehab to be the source for young drag talent” adds Murray.
The extravaganza eleganza begins at noon with the first set. After that, everyone sits down to enjoy Brunch while the Drag Queens perform for 10 minutes before refilling the cocktails and enjoying the second set. The music selection includes classics in the Latino gay scene like Thalía, Gloria Trevi, and Alaska (the Spanish one). Still, they also bring back classics like Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” The four-hour experience features music from all decades and creates a party atmosphere. Rehab provides fake bills for cash so you can tip local Drag Queens.
