Peru will have a seismic alert system in 2021 that will serve to warn of the imminence of an earthquake.
“We have two years for the system to be ready,” the executive director of the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP), Hernando Tavera, announced last Tuesday, according to information from Panorama.
By May 2021 the IGP expects the system to be installed in the central coastal region and by the end of the year in the rest of the country.
Tavera stressed that the system will allow alerting about 35 seconds in advance about a developing seismic movement, which will help the population move to safe places.
“It all depends on how far or near we are to the epicenter. People who are nearby will benefit less,” said the IGP director.
The system consists of 110 sensors that will be placed along the Peruvian coast. Once the seismic station detects movements that generate high levels of ground shaking, it releases electrical impulses that will sound sirens placed at strategic points in coastal cities.
