César Vallejo’s work impacted poetry and literature around the world in the early 20th century; his influence continues to this day. Peru’s House of Literature is hosting an audiovisual exposition dedicated to his legacy.
César Vallejo has, without a doubt, produced many of Peru’s most important works of poetry and literature and has made a lasting impact on the literary world. Imprisoned in his own country and expelled from Paris for his work toward political and social justice, he was never the kind of writer to hide away from the world but actively engaged with it. His story is as powerful as his work.
Now, the House of Peruvian Literature in historic central Lima is hosting an audiovisual exposition dedicated to Vallejo’s legacy.
According to Peru 21, the exposition is the brainchild of audiovisual artist Rubén Romero Prieto, who searched the world for years looking for influences, testimonies, theories, and interpretations of César Vallejo’s work. His travels led him to unexpected places such as Cairo, Egypt, and Montreal, Canada.
The exposition is divided into 4 parts: one displays the geographic reach of Vallejo’s influence, another is dedicated to Paris (where Vallejo died and is buried), a multimedia wall, and a section dedicated to video-poems.
Rubén reveals the inspiration behind the final section. He told Peru 21 that he believes that Peruvians must appropriate César Vallejo in the same way that “the English appropriated Shakespeare.”
The House of Peruvian Literature is located at Jr. Áncash 207, Centro de Lima. The Vallejo exposition will be active until October 1, 2017.
