Clásico to be played in ATE, not National Stadium

Peruvian soccer fans rejoice! The site for the Lima Classic’ between Alianza Lima and Universitarios de Deportes has been confirmed. The two most popular teams in Peru will face off on Saturday June 23rd, at Estadio Monumental in ATE District.

The Universitario’s press team announced the decision earlier today, after the Peruvian Professional Soccer Association approved the move. The game, which is part of Week 23 of the Peruvian domestic league, was originally set to take place at the National Stadium, but due to budgetary constraints, it had to be moved to the U’ home field.

The move will definitely favor Universitarios, as they expect a sold out crowd at their 60,000 seat stadium in ATE.

The Classic between Alianza Lima and Universitario has been played at the National Stadium for the last few years because of fan violence. But the Peruvian Nationa Police assured El Comercio that there will be an elevated police presence for the contest.

The first time the two teams met earlier this year, Alianza Lima came out victorious. The game was played at the National StadiumSite announced for the Lima Clásico.
