Currently, Peru is the main avocado exporter in the South American region, however, Colombia is emerging as a potential supplier of this product for the United States and European markets.
This was informed by Gestión, citing the Foreign Trade Research and Development Institute (IDEXCAM) of the Chamber of Commerce of Lima (CCL).
“Although by far, Chile is our main competitor, we observe that in the last five years, exports of Colombian avocados have shown constant growth, registering an annual expansion of 125%, and they are entering the same markets as Peruvian exports,” said Carlos Posada, executive director of Idexcam.
In 2014, avocado shipments from Colombia reached $4 million US dollars, while in 2018 they achieved a total amount of $62 million.
For this reason, Posada urged the private sector to be constantly monitoring the commercial actions carried out by the country’s main regional competitors.
