Facebook: Apocalyptic weather shakes southern Peru

A photograph that was published yesterday by Facebook user Lisseth Torres de Plasencia, caused some concern for the southern region of Peru, mainly causing a commotion in Moquegua (Ilo). The district had to endure heavy winds for various hours along with dark, thick clouds like the ones seen in the image above.

It’s been noted that the cloud formation was caused by dust rising in the air due to the heavy winds that plagued the district.

Kelita Quispe from the National Service of Meteorolgy of Peru (Senamhi) also confirmed wind related damages in Tacna and in Moquegua (Ilo) including damages to homes in the area. Not only did Tacna fall victim to the heavy winds, but they also had an increase of temperature on Tuesday with a registered 24ºC (75ºF) at 5 p.m. and the prior day, Monday, at the same time with a lower temperature of 16ºC (60ºF).

Quispe also explained that this can happen because of very cold winds moving in upper levels of the atmosphere.
