Close to 500,000 young Peruvians, in five regions, will receive Beca-18 scholarships, as part of the country’s social inclusion and education policies.

The Beca 18 program is part of an education initiative begun by President Ollanta Humala, which aims to provide scholarships to students with economic hardships.

In return for the scholarships, Beca-18 recipients pledge a ‘commitment of service’ in which they agree to provide their professional services to the country.

Beca-18 beneficiaries will include students in Huancavelica, Junín, Ayacucho, Cusco, and Apurimac; regions with high levels of poverty, and which often hurts students chances at advancing educationally and professionally, state new agency Andina reported.

Each scholarship recipient will receive between 2,000 and 2,400 soles every two months, which will help pay for food, transportation, books, and other items, Peru’s Ministry of Education said.
