Court rules Peru’s ex-president Ollanta Humala and spouse Nadine Heredia will remain in preventive prison until trial for Odebrecht scandal.
Last Friday, a Peruvian appeals court rejected an appeal from Peru’s ex-president Ollanta Humala and his wife Nadine Heredia against the ruling that they are to be held in preventive prison until trial.
The trial has not yet been scheduled, but Humala and Heredia may be held up to 18 months until proceedings begin.
The couple is accused of taking bribes from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht during their presidential campaign in 2011. Â However, the scandal was not uncovered until Operation Lava Jato in which Brazil’s national police carried out massive corruption and criminal investigations, the results of which have had international implications.
Reuters reports that Odebrecht allegedly gave the bribes to Humala “on orders from Brazil’s former leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s Workers Party” as stated by Prosecutor German Juarez.
Odebrecht has given millions in bribes throughout Latin America in a scandal that has implicated all 3 of Peru’s ex-presidents since 2001 and most recently, the 2-time candidate Keiko Fujimori.
