Just a few feet off Avenida Larco at 103 Manuel Bonilla you will find a very sweet little café with one of the best value menus in town. Operating out of two rooms of a once-grand house next to Parque Kennedy, owners Juan Carlos Pepper and Monica del Rio serve up café food at it finest at prices that won’t break the bank.
Shades of the old house are seen in the beautifully preserved ceiling moldings. This detail, along with several displays of teacups in various sizes and shapes collected from the couple’s travels, gives the café a casual, elegant feel.
Il cappuccino serves a full list of hot and cold coffee drinks. The mocha shake for 10 soles is a real treat. Assorted bruschetta with your choice of toppings along with a half bottle of wine starting at 27 soles makes for a great light meal choice.
Salads come in two sizes. The large chef’s salad made with green leaf lettuce and packed with fresh veggies is enough to split between several people. The vegetarian club sandwich is served on whole wheat bread and loaded with tomato, artichoke, avocado and eggplant all held together with cream cheese.
The lomo saltado is served with hand-cut yellow potatoes and a pyramid of steamed white rice. Both of these dishes were more than I could eat by myself.
My favorite plate of the afternoon was the waffle. Served with butter, syrup and apple compote, this combination hit home.
These gems are served all day, but next time I’m going back for breakfast. A selection of homemade desserts is offered daily.
For lunch, Chef Monica serves up a five-item menu for 20.50 soles. Choose from five starters, five main dishes, a side dish, soft drink, dessert and café Americano. Choices change every two weeks. Now that’s a deal!
Comfy couches and free Wi-Fi round things out for a great place to enjoy a full meal or just hang out, check e-mail, enjoy a coffee and a delicious dessert.
Open Monday – Saturday, 8:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., closed Sunday
