Inmates at the Socabaya Prison, in Arequipa, once again attempted to take over the prison, on Sunday.

According to Peru21, inmates were responding to a reduction in visiting hours, after prison guards went on strike, and blocked the entry of visitors into the prison, last week.

The daily said inmates gathered into groups, and attempted to take over the prison.

“A security team was forced to restrict access between cell blocks, and lock down the cells, to prevent inmates from gathering, and starting a riot,” said Richard Salas, a spokesperson for the prison employee’s union.

“Faced with the pressure being exerted from the inmates, visitors were allowed in at two in the afternoon,” he added.

Salas said precautions were being taken, to prevent prisoners from attempting further riots.

According to Peru21, Socabaya is home to over 1,000 inmates, and only has 20 prison guards on staff.
