On Friday Joran Van der Sloot was sentenced to 28 years in jail, for the murder of Stephany Flores.

Before reading the sentence, the court described at great length the events that led up to the murder of 21-year old Flores, on June 6 2010.

Van der Sloot was wearing a green t-shirt and jeans. He sweated profusely and appeared to wipe away tears.

At several points Van der Sloot hung his head as the charges against him were being read.

The judges said they did not accept the Dutchman’s ”sincere confession,” and said he was sentenced to 28 years in jail and ordered to pay a 200 thousand soles fine, to be paid to Flores’ family.

The court said Van der Sloot would remain in jail until June 10th 2038.

On Wednesday, Van der Sloot had pleaded guilty to all the charges brought against him.

“I want to give a sincere confession, I am truly regretful for what I have done, I feel very bad,” he said.

His lawyer, Jose Luis Jimenez, had asked the judges to keep in mind Van der Sloot’s cooperation with police during the investigation and his fragile state of mind during the murder.

Jimenez said they would appeal the sentence.

Local media reported that under Peruvian law, Van der Sloot could serve as little as 8 years, if he is given work benefits in prison.
