Lima’s unemployment saw a drop during the last quarter of last year.

According to the latest report by the country’s Institute of National Statistics (INEI) unemployment in the Peruvian capital fell to 5.6 percent between October and December.

The drop over these months, the INEI said, accounts for 1.4 decrease in unemployment compared to the same period in 2011, El Comercio said.

According to the report, there are currently 272,800 unemployed people in Lima.

The drop in unemployment has been fueled in part by the Peruvian economy’s growth – last November Peru recorded 6.83 percent growth in its economy, El Comercio said.

Furthermore, the INEI reported that the average salary in Lima increased by 4 percent, and is currently at 1,326 soles per month, 51.5 soles more than in October 2011, the daily said.
