Matadorcitas earn second win at U20 World Championships, qualify for round of 16


Peru’s volleyball team is showing signs of life at the 2013 FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship after beating Czech Republic in straight sets on Monday night. The Matadorcitas (little killers) defeated the home team in front of 2,850 fans in the city of Brno to earn a spot in the round of 16.

The girls finished with a record of two wins and two loses after struggling with Chinese Taipei (2-3) and the Dominican Republic(2-3). The Matadorcitas scored the first win on Saturday against Puerto Rico 3-1.

Tomorrow, the Peruvian squad will play Japan for a spot in the quarterfinals. If Peru wins, they will face the winner of Turkey and Mexico in the next round.

Peru’s Milagros Rodriguez is among the top players in the tournament with 57 spikes and seven blocks. Team captain, Angela Leyva, is also having an exceptional tournament with 56 spikes and 6 blocks for the red and white squad.

Peru must win the next four matches to be crowned Women’s U20 World Champions 2013.
