The President of Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, said that the apologies presented to Peru regarding Argentina’s sale of arms to Ecuador during “express a feeling” rather than "just an act of protocol."
After emphasizing the “unbreakable friendship” between Argentina and Peru, she remembered that this scandal jumped to the press when she was a senator, and she then had expressed her solidarity with the Peruvian people.
“I want to tell you that these words that I have expressed as a President regarding the apologies and the historical reparation were neither a speech of protocol nor suddenly pronounced with the idea of recomposing our relations,” she said.
This is her first official visit to Peru since she took office in December, 2007 and the first official visit from an Argentinian president in 16 years.
The previous day, President Alan Garcia had decorated Kirchner with the highest level medal of Peru, the Gran Cruz Sol del Peru.
