Peru: risky sex behavior increases among high school studentsSexual activity among young people under age 18 in Peru seems to be increasing; 19.5% of high school students between 13 and 18 years old have already had sex, according to according to a study conducted by the University of Piura, the University of Navarra (Spain) and Intermedia Consulting (Italy).

The research, called Estilos de vida de los adolescentes peruanos (Life styles among Peruvian teens) also reveals that 48.5% out of these sexually active youngsters have not used protection.

In addition, 6.1% of all the polled teens aged 13 (men and women) said they have had at least one sexual intercourse.

Teens between 13 and 18 mention sex drive (76.8%) and the feeling of being highly valued (47%) as some of their motivations to engage in sexual intercourse.

The research also shows that 45.5% of these high-school students in urban areas have access to internet via cibercafes rather than from their homes.
