Peru’s meteorologic service, Senamhi, issued a warning of extremely low temperatures for Peru’s southern regions, specially in Puno, where temperatures are expected to drop to -23°C in certain areas located higher than 3,600 meters, like Mazocruz.
This forecasts is valid until Saturday, Aug. 21, says Teresa Garcia, an expert from Senamhi.
She also explained that central Andean regions may be affected too, but the cold will not be so extreme.
“Huancayo will have minimum temperatures between 0°C to 5°C, and Huancavelica will stand -2°C or -3°C,” she said.
However, this cold snap is not expected to affect the jungle regions, according to the Senamhi.
Javier Paredes, from the Regional Government of Puno, told the press that the sectors most affected by these cold snaps are the ones related to health and agriculture, as well as the tourism.
