Peru to promote avocado in the US market

The Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture announced the creation the Peruvian Avocado Commission (PAC).

This first Peru-US binational association will jointly promote Peruvian avocados in the US market.

The PAC will monitor the production, packing and exporting of avocado companies in Peru as well as importers in the US, according to a statement of the ministry.

The association will be chaired by Enrique Camet, current chairman of the Peruvian Hass Avocado Producers’ Association – ProHass.

The seal of approval was received by the ministry on November 12 from Edward Ávalos, sub-secretary of the US Agriculture Department’s Marketing and Regulatory Affairs Agency.

“It’s an honor and a huge step for the Peruvian agriculture industry. This will enable us to continue the promotion of Hass avocados, increasing the consumption in the US,” explained Peruvian Agriculture Minister Rafael Quevedo Flores.

Edward Ávalos said the idea is to build a year-round presence of Hass avocados in the US market to promote continued consumption. Peru’s avocado season does not overlap with other countries, including the US.

According to, the PAC will collect subsidies of US$0.05 from each kilo of avocados shipped to the US in order to fund the promotions.

Avocado production in Peru rose by 14.7 percent in the first nine months of the year. Exports reached US $82.1 million in value.
